I recently purchased an AC 50 to replace my AC 30. When I installed the AC 50, it was quite noisy. I determined that it was the motor. My 30 never made any noise, so I switched the motors. They seemed to be the same as their model #'s were identical.

The original noisy motor on the AC 50, however, was much more powerful, as the water flow was very strong.

Does anyone know if these motors can be switched? Are they the same? (Their model #'s indicate that they are, but their power doesn't).

Please help,
Thanks

I don't know what exactly you switched. If the part numbers are the same the part must be the same, however the partnumber you found could be the partnumber of the casing of the motor... how about the impeller, are they the same size? Could be that the same motors are used on both models but with different sized impellers, causing the difference in flow. Maybe you could post a pic of the parts you switch?

I was researching something similar a few weeks ago and from what I remember, Aquaclears use the same motor, but it's the impeller that sets them apart in terms of waterflow. I remember there were people who switched the impellers but not the motors to adjust GPH. Could be wrong though.

If the impeller is the only difference you might need some new rubbers for it. I don't know how your pump is build, but when my eheim pump started to make a ratteling noise it was because the rubbers that hold the impeller shaft in place where dried out causing the shaft to be able to move.

I think you're correct. I seem to remember the impeller looking different, (bigger on the AC 50). I have the AC 50 in the office right now so I can't compare then but I'll post photos this Tuesday.

Thank you both.

PS Paula. I like your website. Your photo however, is covered with text. I do websites and would be happy to assist you in repairing that.

The magnet parts of the motors are the same, it's just the impellors that are different. People who use AC110's as refugiums on nanotanks often replace the AC110's motor with an AC20's to reduce the flow rate.
