Aps 1400 Ef Owners Question

Well I have edited the header to reflect that I am now in possession of the APS 1400EF.

I have sent an email to APS about the quality of this filter i.e. is it brand new, secondhand or reconditioned.
10/10 for delivery - it arrived this afternoon by free UPS.

0/10 for what I find.
It is apparent that the APS filter cardboard box has been opened a number of times due to the wear and tear on it and that one of the securing tabs was INSIDE the box and not connected to where it should be. The box containing the hoses etc was also creased.

As far as I am concerned, I paid for a brand new filter and I expect to find that its containment box and anything else in that box is brand new and not been opened several times.

Needless to say that the filter has not been brought into use and remains within its original packaging until such time I hear from APS.

Not a happy bunny at the moment.

Well I heard from APS and was advised that the filters are removed from their boxes by their staff for checking and then repacked.
Hmm - seems mine was checked and rechecked umpteen times - so I'll let that pass.

Yesterday, I set about installing the filter. Our tank sits upon a coffee table to which I attached a mdf backing to hide all the cables.
So a quick visit to B&Q and I returned with a 28mm drill bit and made two holes in the backing to feed the hoses through.
Cut the hoses to length and connected hoses to pipework and then the filter detachable input and output discreteness as the instruction sheet calls it!!!!

I then turned my attention to the filter. I gave it a good clean out, put the ceramic rings in the bottom basket, the bioballs along with ten Pure Aqua balls in the middle basket and left one bag of carbon in the top basket. The intention was - and still is - to put the sponge from my existing filter in the other part of the basket. So I am now sitting there pumping away trying to prime the filter and I can hear a trickle of water going into the filter. I thought to myself that this is going to take for ever and an age. So what I did was to fill the filter with dechlorinated water of a suitable temperature - great saves all that pumping and a lot of time.

I connected it all back and gave the system a few more pumps to dispel any air in the filter.
I then switched on.

W H O O O S H!!!! As I looked at the tank this blooming great black cloud of what looks like carbon invaded the tank.
The filter was switched off immediately and a 90% water change undertaken - much to the annoyance of the fish as I had done a 50% water change earlier in the day whilst cleaning the tank.

By this time, my patience had worn very thin. So at the moment the filter sits under the coffee table unused and my existing internal is still doing its job.

I am beginning to think that I am not destined to have an external filter fitted to this tank and I sincerely hope that this will not suffer courtesy of any residual carbon that may still be left in the tank.

So that's where I am thus far - tomorrow is another day.

All carbon needs thorough rinsing before you can use it. It's not a problem with your filter! It won't do any harm, anyway.
