I think the question is best asked using an example :)
-------
The tank can hold 300Liter. If I add 20 liters of sand, I suppose I can add up to 280L water. right? I am assuming the water displaced by the plants/fish are negligible. And there are no rocks/wood in the tank.
-------

thank you very much :)

It sounds about right to me. One hazard of using that approach is that the tanks that are called 20 gallons only hold about 18 and the ones called 29 gallon hold about 26, etc. If you are using the tank nominal volume, at least in the US, you will always get a wrong answer. Try measuring the inside dimensions of your tank and the height only to the actual water line. You can use those numbers in the calculator at the top of our forum to get a real volume instead of the fiction the manufacturers give you as the volume.

Whats the reason behind wanting to know this? Im just curious!

thanks oldman47.

The 300L volume was calculated using inner dimensions with some centimeters deducted from the height because my tank has some braces on the 8cm mark (8cm from the top).

if you're referring to the fictitious volume size as used by most fish tank vendors, I suppose it's making buyers believe they are getting more for their money.

I was talking about the reasoning behind you wanting to know how much water your tank will hold

That is as good a reason as any I can think of Jarthel. I always want to know anything that I can learn, whether or not it makes any difference.

you also gotta realise that if you put 20L of sand in, it wont displace 20L of water, because the water will move inbetween the sand and fill in all the gaps. For example, 20L of gravel may only displace 10L of water, it will be less of a difference for sand but you get the idea :)
