Just got a new aqua one nano 30 (22 l) to use as a fry tank for ny few platy fry I get. I've got a golden apple snail in there, and was wondering if there's anything I should know? For example do I just feed it with sinking algae wafers? And also is it true I need to leave an air gap?

Algae wafers, romaine lettuce, zucchini, shrimp pellets. You only need to leave a small gap for it to take a breathe.

Brilliant, thanks for the reply. I gave him some cucumber last night which he seemed to like too. I'll out I photo of the tank on here soon so you can see. I think the gaps big enough

An apple snail should not be in the tank with fry its a big messy pooing machine and will pollute the water in no time. The snail along need to be in a 10G let alone the occupants, if the snail take a turn for the worst it will wipe out 22L tank in no time at all, just my limited experiences raising the odd one :good:

Right. Like 2,000 odd ones or so!

yep, I put my apple snail in my fry tank (I had a platy that was trying to eat him in the main tank) and in no time at all I had 4ppm of ammonia in there. He's gone back in my main tank now (and the platy got fed up of trying to eat him thankfully) and all is well again.

There's also more than enough algae, bits of uneaten wafers, pellets and flake in there to keep him fed well. Mine doesn't like cucumber or courgette but he'll sit on an algae wafer happily.

Glad you didn't have to give up the platy X)
I will be getting either a trumpet or apple snail, depending on what they have at the shop tomorrow. I hope I won't wake up with 4 ppm ammonia in my 20 gal for 1 snail o_O

Unfortunately, not. I'm in Romania -.-

Hiya FB, the trumpets are quite small get 5-10 if you can :) They don't add much bioload to the tank

I'd get 2 at most for a start, because my hoplo might not like them on his territory. He might end up eating them or sticking their shell in his mouth -.-
How small are they in cm?
And how big is an apple snail?
I'd go for a bigger snail but not sure which is at least 1 cm.

Pff how dad always puts off stuff just for other people. -.- He has yet to build that fish tank lid too. But instead, he's off to the graveyard to fix some problem related to the grave places for his sister. -.- Nice...
Well, that screwed today's plans.

I love my apples, but they don't half add a massive bioload. And they do poo like crazy. Fortunately, mine have never laid eggs. Mine eat whatever flake, peas, and algae wafers are left over from the fish and shrimp.

I am terrified about one of them dieing though, so I may look to rehome them soon.
