Is it ok to have Apple Snails in a tank with no top, i have a Fluval Osaka 260 which has no lid, would the snails stay in the water or crawl out and go for a wander?

i just got some this morning and from what i can see i wouldnt be surprised if they did wander  tho maybe they would realise theres no water and turn back and go the way they came :dunno:

they can survive weeks without water.

i had 5 apple snails in a small uncovered tank and then about a week ago i went to take them out to move them and i could only find 4!

You do need a lid, as was stated before they can survive out of water for some time, not something you want to be treading on in your bear feet

Mine only ever crawled out to lay eggs, or just barely broke the surface the breathe some air. If your water quality is good and they aren't being harassed by tankmates they should stay in, IME.

Mine have never gone 1/2" from the water, usually keeping at least 1/2 their bodies in the water whilst investigating the surface. However, thats not to say, if there was no lid, they wouldnt try and go futher.

If you have no lid, put some nettings or something similar over the top.

mine were in a tank with no lid the first time i kept them and i had snail eggs laid on the wall next to the tank ewwwwwww
then i found the snails under the tv cabinet - followed the trail
i suppose they couldn't get back in , but were happy when they got back in

have had some others escape through a large hole in the back of the another tank (didnt have a lot of space under the lid to lay eggs) and crack their shells these to were females
