Apple Snails

Possibly, my zebra nerites sometimes end up on the watch glass but they find their way back in eventually.

think they will only crawl out of water to lay eggs then go back in?

Hi rocknurworld2006 :)

Yes, they can escape. If the tank isn't well covered they will end up on the floor. :X

i keep apple snails in one of my open top tanks and they have never escaped, on a couple of occasions they have crawled up the luminaire bracket to lay eggs, as far as i know this is normal behaviour though.

yes I belive they will(correct me if im wrong please)

they are both male and female sex so they mate with themselves and can produce eggs of 100 at a time, so before you know it you could have hundreds and hundreds of snails growing out of control which is why if i see one i always try and crush it for food for the fish

Apple snails are not hermaphroditic like most snails. You need two to tango. They can however store sperm packets so you are not totally in the clear. They crawl out of the water and lay very noticeable egg clutches so if you were definitely averse to having snails, you could remove the clutch and throw them away.

Don't worry, Fisses isnt right about apple snails, though this does occur with lots of snails, not apple snails.
What nosoup4you says is right.
Even if that were the case, they la large clutches off pink coloured eggs above the water so you could just get rid of the eggs if you wanted.

everyone ive spoken to about snails has told me that they are a same sex species and will mate with themselves???

But 'snails' aren't a species, 'snail' is just a common name that applies to a lot of members within the class Gastropoda.

Some need two to reproduce but they don't have a specific sex (like garden snails and 'pest' tadpole snails), some can reproduce on their own without a partner (like the common aquarium Malaysian trumpet snail) and some (like apple snails) need both a male and a female to breed.
