just picked up 3 apple snails, i have them in a tank along with 5 clown loaches...just wondering if the loaches will control the population when/if the snails breed, as idk how fast or how many eggs will be produced...i tried to search the forum for this but the search is still down...thanks for any help

Apple or mystery snails are slow growers and slow breeders. When mature they produce a cluster of eggs containing between 20 & 200 eggs. The cluster of eggs is laid out of water, usually on the underside of the coverglass. The eggs develop over a couple of weeks before the baby snails hatch out and drop into the water.

Big apple snails will normally be fine with small loaches, but when the loaches grow, they will probably eat the adult snails. If you want snails to feed the loaches then set up a separate tank for the snails and put the surplus snails in the loach tank.

Ramshorn snails breed more readily than apple snails.

Thanks alot! my loaches are 2" at most, they are kinda picking at em and only one of the three is actually out and about now lol...Thanks again for the info!

The snails are doomed...I've had adult apple snails with 2" yo-yo loaches and they just picked at them till they died.

Really? Damn...oh well...i did notice they are all sealed up tight...They do move around at night tho, i wake up and they are all in different places...well if they dont make it i wont be too heart broken lol...Thanks for the reply!

the snails will be though cant you just take them out and give them to someone who wont put them in for just food
apple snails are fascinating little critters and are so lively and playful i hate to see people neglecting any species

no one else i know has a fish tank any more...they all moved too far away...

put an ad on the buy sell swap on here, there might be someone near you that wants them - i would if i was in the US - i adore them --- i should do i've got over 600 babies now lmao

take care Sarahx

well over the last 2 days one has opened up and been moving around all day while the other two have been out a little this evening...my two newest CLs still pick at them when they are closed tho...if problems persist i might just take em back to my LFS, but keep the other one lol he moves so fast i lose track of where he is from time to time lol...but yea, Pippoodle, i totally know what you mean after seeing the little buggers do their thing, thansk for the concern :)
