Woo Hoo! My 2 gal Betta tank appears to by cycled. I have one Betta that seems to be doing well.
Now the tank:
2 gallon tank with divided substrate. sand on one side, flat glass marbles on the other side.
Heated
Top Fin filter rated for up to ten gallons.
no air stone
Since the 10 gal filter seemed to create a bit of current in this tiny tank, I put in a partial divider at the top of the tank so that the betta could get away from the current if he chose to. It also provides a calm place for him to make bubbles. He seems to be quite satisfied with this arrangement as he spends time on both sides of the partition. There is also a small cave in the tank that he will sometimes retire to.
I tried an airstone in the tank, but it seemed to create too much current for this application.

Now the question.
Would an Apple snail do well in this envirionment? I know the apple snail does just fine in a normal tropical tank, but as this one is so small and has no aeration, I am not sure.
Thanks for all responses.

Well I'm not sure about having an apple snail in there as I've never had one. I have heard though that cories do excellent with bettas and cories are very cool little fish. They aren't exactly hyper they just move around alot and they aren't to expensive at all. So if someone says no to the apple snail, you should try some cories!

I certainly have no objection to a lil cory. Cory owners do seem delighted with them. However the lack of aeration gives me concern with them as well. As the snail seems to be able to go to the top for air, I was wondering if they would be the better choice.

I think a betta will terrorise a snail, pecking at its delicate breathing tube. My old beta would anyway, he user to share with a crab who learned karate moves with his claws to protect his eyes!!! :hey:

Commander,
I chose a TOP FIN ( Petsmart Brand) filter for my little tank. There are some other small filters out there but this one hangs on the side of the tank and takes up very little space inside the tank. Whisper (also found at Petsmart) makes an ok small filter but the whole unit goes inside the tank, takes much much more space, and looks awful. You really can't hide it.
I am sure some of the more experienced folks here will be able to guide you better than I, but that was my choice for the amount of money I could spend at the time. My little tank has cycled and Mr Betta seems to be happy.
Now there was another reason for going with the filter I chose. Plain Jane 5 gal tanks don't seem to be available anymore, but I am going to start scouting the yard sales, for sale ads, etc and see if I can come up with one. I am hoping that with a 5 gal tank, I will be better able to find the betta some tank mates that will be compatible.
Commander, for a heater I chose a 25 W submersible Hagen heater. This heater is rated up to 5 gals, seems to keep the water at a very constant temp. I don't feel at this time that I will ever invest in another TOP FIN Heater, such as I am using in my Tropical 10 gal tank. However that is just my opinion and again others may have found they have other preferences..

Another option Commander is to use a sponge filter, several companies make them an u just attach an air pump to them, aeration and filtration in one.

so I would say to get 2 maybe 3 cories! good luck with them!

Two or three? Good god, how would they all fit comfortabley in a wee two gallon tank? Talk about a lock of elbow room....

Well, I found out last night in chat that Snails are quite the escape artist. As I dont have a top on this tank at this time, its a mute point. Maybe I will give this more consideration later when I get a little larger tank with a proper top.
