I just thought I would share some pictures of my young male Jack Dempsey. I was able to borrow a friend's camera and used the opportunity to snap some shots of my baby! :D So, here he is!

He's about 4.5-5 inches from nose to the tip of his tail. The first month that I had him, he was about 1.5-2 inches. After that first month, he has grown at about half an inch a month. Lately, it's been more filling out than growing in length though.

The tank he is currently in is a 10 gallon tank with a 20 gallon filter. He's been in it since I bought him. I know that he is outgrowing it, I have a 30 gallon tank that is cycling for him to move in to. I do two 40% water changes every week. I keep an eye on his water stats. I never have any ammonia or nitrite. If he is particularly dirty, I do extra 10% water changes between the regular water changes.

He is looking very good to me but the sooner the better on that tank upgrade. He is probably already feeling a bit crowded.

Too big for a 30 gallon?! I thought they only get up to 12 inches. It's a 30 long, so he's got lots of horizontal area. I am very strict with my water changes, I do them twice a week. He isn't going to have any tankmates. I cant get anything bigger that this 30 gallon. :/ It's hard times and I can't afford anything else. This 30 gallon was given to me for free, that's why I allowed myself to get a fish that gets this big. I've read that the rule is a gallon of water per inch of fish, and the 30 gallon would be 2.5 gallons of water per inch of fish. And that's if he gets up to 12 inches.

He really needs a bigger tank. I do understand about hard times though! mAtleast gas has gone down. Its $ 1.89 a gallon here.

that rule only really applys to fish that max out round 3inches,,,,
cichlids need enough room to turn around in a comfortably swim up and down etc,,,,,

i have my brutis the jaguar cichlid meausures roughly 11inches in a 3ft long / 18inch tall / 15inch width but this in my oppinion is to small but iam trying my hardest to locate a new tank for him,,,,
atleast 4ft/18/18inch or 5ft/18/18inch latter is what i really want,,,,

FYI.... "he" is a she.... can tell from the coloration on the gill plates and the dorsal fin

Ox :good:
