Had a tank [90 ltr] running since december 2010,all readings normal ,ammonia etc ,ph 7.6,but I dont seem able to keep blue rams or apistos alive for very long, last weekend bought a pair of apisto agazizzi seemed fine both eating flake/bloodworm then two days ago the male stopped eating and today no sign of him this seems to follow a pattern with blue rams and apistos which I try to keep, could it be the ph 7.6 is that too high for these fish, should I give up trying to keep them?,any dwarf cichlids that do well in a ph of 7.6?

I have kept Anomalochromis Thomasi successfully at a ph not too different to yours with no issues at all. They even spawned a while ago and are an excellent peaceful species i have found. Definately worth a go!!! Your Blue Rams water parameters will have to be spot on though to keep them happy. As for Apisto's, maybe you got poor stock. They're usually pretty hardy.

Thanks Minnnt,Ive just found the male dead,Ive given up trying to keep gbr,s thought I would have more success with apistos but I seem to keep losing the males, got a female triple red apisto which Ive had for about 6 months but she keeps outliving any males I put with her,now the female agazizzi is still fine but the male is no more I,m baffled

Sorry to hear that mate. :(

Are your water conditions ok? Amonnia, Nitrite and Nitrate? Temperature? Tankmates?

Pelvicachromis Pulcher - Kribensis are also hardy and tolerant of a higher ph like yours.

Tested all the water ammonia etc fine, temp 80 deg , I wouldnt think there was a problem with tank mates pencilfish, galaxy rasborras pygmy corrys sparkling gouramis and an original triple red apisto [female] now I have two females one triple red and one agazizzi ,why do I keep losing the males? cant get my head round that

Unsure mate. Maybe a poor strain from the shop you got them from. Maybe try another shop?

I would say no mate. Kribs can be evil when spawning. I would say it is one or the other. I think your other tank mates would be at risk with the Kribs too. I think your two females will live very happily together anyway providing your tank is well setup with very definate territories.

Good luck mate :) If all else fails then bare the Thomasi in mind. Really pretty friendly dwarf cichlid. :)

What are the dimensions of the 90? Bolivians may be just too large for it though. Same thing happened to me with blue ram, all fine then bang. Im tempted to try again but tey are 9.95 in my LFS :-(

GBRs are very sensitive fish when it come to water quality

I agree but i think its more to do with suiting their parameters, rather than how good your water is, or is that what you meant?
