Apistogramma Cacatuoides Losing His Tail

80x35x50.3cm current temp is 29oc which is way higher than normal, usually ~24-25. Ive just opened my window to try and cool it off abit, should I do a pwc?dosage is 1ml per 5l

Do large water change. Don't forget to dechlorinate water first!

Dosage is fine, so not sure what caused it. I did used to have a bottle of the stuff many years ago, but never used it. I've heard of similar stuff happening before though.

Okay so just did a 75% change and theyre all perking up abit although I'm always worried the temp fluctuates alot when I change the water, especially when it gets high because of my gobys.
Just praying no-one dies tonight now no idea what I should do with the apisto if the problem continues. Fish are so stressful sometimes!!

Does finrot usually just clear itself up if the water params stay right? I check them weekly and daily when I add new fish and havent had any problems at all..

It will usually clear up if your tank is a non-stressful environment for the fish and you do water changes often for the duration of the problem.

If I need to use medication, I will use only eSHa 2000 for fin rot and fungus as it is the only one I have found to actually do something positive and to not have any negative effects. Be careful, some medications will kill the filter and not all of them warn of that.

Thanks everyone for your help :)

I'll try not to rush into meds next time but I did check to see if it was safe for the fish and filter, which i've done for malchite green in the past.

Just to let you know he seems fine now and his tail is growing back already! All other fish are perfectly healthy again after the medicine disaster! FK is such a rollercoaster sometimes!

Thanks =)

Okay, so a bit of an update: I don't think this was fin rot at all. His tail recovered in places and then just split in others, it got better for a long time but this last few days it's gotten worse again and I have no idea why. Water params are 0-0-10. Same tank inhabitants and haven't added any since. Today his tail went from having a couple of minor splits to having part of it completely split down the middle and I have no idea why, I feed him a mix of frozen bloodworm, frozen brineshrimp and frozen daphnia as he doesnt eat anything else is this an acceptable diet as I've read that it could be due to a vitamin deficiency?

I have a largish plant with what look like little white branches/roots directed at the sand with very small spikes on them (only just noticed the small spikes today) No idea what the plant is called but I think this might be the cause?

Note it's still only him with this problem, nothing on mrs apisto or on the ram who has a fairly large tail.

Any advice would be great :) thanks!

Hi,

I see that you had a similar situation to mine, mikeyy_lol
I too suspected finrot and had elevated ammonia in water. After Interpet finrot treatment one of my larger fishes got it's tail mysteriously caught in the filter, I found it there dead already, which I thought was strange, since I had checked on them not long before that.
Do you think this Interpetmed could have somehow affected the culture in the filter, because my ammonia is up despite the waterchanges.

I don't think so I haven't had any readable ammonia or nitrite in a long time even with the treatment, I didn't use a full dose though. Try checking the active ingredient in it on google (some kind of alcohol i think it was) and see if you can find anything more on it than I could but I don't remember it being harmful to the bacteria otherwise i wouldnt have used it :)

Mike, I wonder if your fish are getting all the nutrition they need. Looks like you don't feed any kind of flake at all. Anybody else that has some info?

You're right I don't, not the apistos anyway they simply dont take it. I have some tropical flakes, pellets, new era cichlid pellets that were really expensive! this pink brine shrimp jelly stuff, Zoo med aquatic frog and tadpole bites and they just wont take it! Can I not solely use the frozen food for a staple?

This is one of the conclusions I'm coming too after researching it aswell but I don't know what I can do!

It was just something that occurred to me. I don't know enough about the food you do feed them. Flakes are enhanced with vitamins and minerals and such, and I'm curious to know if maybe they're missing some kind of nutrient by getting only the frozen food. I know you can't force feed them! I don't have an answer. Sorry.

#29###! thanks for trying anyway I really appreciate it, I wish I had any idea why this is happening!

I do share your frustration, as I'm going through some problems in my tank as well. I sure wish there was a simple way to figure these things out!

Nothing is ever easy is it! Haha. I'm just hoping they're still okay when I get home from my holidays I thought his fin was starting to heal until I looked over and there was a rip straight through the middle!
Thanks for your help though, hope all ends up well in your tank!
