Apistogramma cacatuoides fry

I recently obtained a pair of a. cacatuoides orange and I already have fry. The fry are much smaller than I am used to. The first time parents are doing a decent job of caretaking.

How small are they ? Can they take newly hatched baby brine shrimp ? If they can take BBS then they aren’t so small .

I just ordered a BBS kit. I’ll know in a few days. The mother and father are first time parents. They are not being particularly territorial. I guess that happens with naïve parents. My Molly’s are looming in the background. Looking for an easy snack.

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a hundred times . Everybody should have the gear and know how to hatch out baby brine shrimp . One never knows when the time will unexpectedly arise for you to hatch them out . Hatching out BBS is a basic skill that EVERY aquarist should know . I hope you raise those fry up . That would be great !

How do you deliver the BBS so it gets to the fry? The fry are in the main tank with parents and other fish.

You can use an eye dropper or long nose pipette. they should be left with the parents. They can take bbs - you can try decapsulate brine shrimp eggs if you can't get some bbs hatched fast enough. You can also try some ground up flakes basically stick your finger in the water put a coupel of flakes between your finger and grind it down to a soup.

If your tank is very mature there might be some infusia they can feed on for a few days. Cockatoo frys are not that small - there frys a lot smaller.

Just drop them in the water they will swim a good while, Use a turkey baster or a coral feeder to drop in their zone.

The shrimps are going to swim a good while after you add them.

I have a pair of Mollys in the tank with the a. cacatuoides couple. I think the Mollys are eating the Apistogramma fry. I may have to move the Mollys to another tank before the next apistogramma spawn. The apistogramma couple are not being terribly territorial in the area of the fry. I assume this is because they are new parents. The Molly’s are taking advantage of the situation.

The Mollys are definitely eating my new a. cacatuoides fry. And the Mollys were fed generously yesterday. I no longer see any fry So I moved the Molly pair into my 60 gallon African tank. I’m not comfortable with the move because I wanted that tank to house only fish from west Africa and the Congo. Maybe this will be a temporary solution. I hope so.

Well... when you think about molly wanting hard water and cocktoo preferring soft water....

My tank raised cockatoo lineage has lived in moderate hard water for many generations.
