Nice picture. The female has some real colour in her dorsal fin. Love the intense yellow they go when in breeding dress.

Water changes are better off being done little and often. They will grow much quicker the cleaner the water. Due to the high amount of food they are given, the water can foul very quickly indeed. Feed little and often too. Mines getting about 4 feeds a day atm.

I've been given some frozen rotifers from a guy at my LFS who said they'd be suitable for the fry - but keep reading they're marine food. Am I ok feeding the fry these?

Thanks minnnt, great help as always.

Out of a batch of fry, is it typical to see a few die off?

I think there's anything between 25-40 fry at the moment, but today I noticed one kinda lost it's buoyancy and was having trouble swimming before floating to the top motionless. Whilst it was there I spotted another unfortunate victim!

I'm planning on changing roughly 30-40% of the water every couple of days, is this ok? I did my first change last night.

I have liquifry, fine flakes and the rotifers to feed them - although its almost impossible to actually get the food to land where they are and ensure they are eating it! I hope they'll be ok!

Many thanks.

Yeah, don't let it worry you too much. It is definately survival of the strongest.

Good luck with them. :D

Well guys, you're not going to believe this!

When I originally bought my apisto's, I got 2 females and 1 male.

It was actually last night in bed I'd been thinking to myself I haven't seen the other female since all this happened with the one having fry etc.

So tonight I look around the tank and eventually find her in the opposite corner to where the other one had her fry.... and she's all bright coloured and protecting a batch of her own fry!!

I really dont know what to do here! Ive already got one other tank specifically for the first mother and her fry (who touch wood seem to be doing ok) but I can't really just go out and get a third one! Think i might have to let nature take its course here... I just feel bad!!

Is it normal for this to happen? Ive heard of them pairing up - but this male seems to be a stallion!

How are they going mate? Had to remove my male as he was starting to get aggessive with the female. She is doing a great job of raising them though. She has killed one of my oto's though.

Good and bad news to report!

Firstly the separate tank with mum & fry - fry all doing ok. Touch wood no further fry death since the first couple. Still not sure if and how they're eating but they're busy little things and im putting small amounts of food in there a few times a day so they've got food!

The tank actually registered tiny amount of ammonia yesterday, which I can only put down to the fact the filter needs to catch up. It does have a bit of my other tanks mature media in it, but seems to be taking its time. I don't know whether to completely take all the media of the Fluval HOB filter out and stick 100% media from my tetra in there? Opinions?

Either way im changing the water every day or other day at the moment so it's all ok.

Now the bad news - my main tank. The other apisto female who only a few days ago had her own fry, I found dead this morning in her cave! Really upset, and not a clue why! Could she have got in a fight defending her babies? Could the male have attacked her? Really shocked.

Levels are all fine in the main tank - the important zero's and nitrate less than 10ppm. I do a 30% w/c every week on the tank and always remove debris etc. I'm genuinely not sure how this has happened!

Oh no! :( could be the same as what my male was doing to the female?

The ammonia may be down to the amount of food your giving. That's why water changes are vital. :good: leave the filter as it is too.

I have witnessed my female taking food, chewing it, then passing it out through her gills in tiny pieces so the fry can feed!! :hyper: totally amazed by this behaviour, never experienced that before with any other breeding fish.

All okay at the moment over in the fry tank - but I'm at a total loss here!

Just looked in the main tank tonight, and the male is lying on the bottom and not moving much. His eyes look strange, almost as if he's been shocked by something. His mouth is quite wide open and not shutting as usual when they do when they breathe.

What could this be? I feel as if it's a matter of time before he goes like the previous female did! Really so strange. He has a little mark on him as if he's been nipped but it's tiny in relation to his size.

I've gone from 1 happy male spawning with 2 females to 1 female and now the male looks in trouble!

Water change as a precaution mate. Is there anything else in the tank to challenge him? Could the 'mark' on him be from the heater?

Large water change carried out on main tank and fish seem ok in there now. Levels are always ok - and I do a 30-35% w/c without fail every week anyway, but I did a large one this week.

However, things have gone from bad to worse. I'm currently absolutely gutted.

The mother of the fry - bearing in mind this is in a different tank, with a 40% water change every other day with temperature matched, clean dechlorinated water - passed away today. I seriously do not know whats gone on, other than possibly all my apisto's had some sort of illness without me realising? But why would they spawn whilst unwell? It doesn't make sense to me.

As mentioned, water in the fry tank has been changed every other day and sometimes every day. Levels are all 0 and even nitrate is barely registering because of the frequency of the changes.

I noticed last night the mother had one quite pale, with no bold markings anymore. Anyway whilst at work today my girlfriend told me she was floating upside down and died a bit later. I'm gutted

The fry are all ok. Will they survive? They're currently about 5mm big, and now actually starting to resemble the cichlid shape.

I must admit this has put a real downer on everything. Beyond changing the water, keeping them in a stable ph, temp etc... What can I do? Is it worth putting any treatments in the fry tank?

Absolutely gutted for you mate. :(

Impossible to say what caused it.

The fry will be fine.
