can i use api pondcare melafix for a 50 gallon saltwater tank? i don't have any experience with saltwater tanks/fish, and the tank is in a club i go to bimonthly, so i don't know if the filter has activated carbon. i assume that activated carbon is only found in freshwater setups?

We use carbon all the time here. If the tank uses a protein skimmer, turn it off when dosing melafix. Makes the skimmer goes nutty. Safe to use for saltwater applications.

pondcare melafix is exacly the same as melafix, it is just a higher concentration of the
active ingredent. (5% instead of 1%)
as long as this is taken into consideration and dosage is done accordinly
it will be fine :good:

what is the most number of consecutive weeks i can dose with pondcare melafix in the 50 gallon tank?

I'd be worried about doing it for more than 2-3 weeks... Why do you want to do extended doses with melafix?

ok, then i'll just dose for 2 weeks max. should i do a partial water change at the end of each week during the treatment period? if so, should i use dechlorinator, or is that only for freshwater tanks?

Well, I'd be using RO water anyways, but I would not waterchange in between the two weeks. After treatment is done, waterchange and run carbon. But I'll ask again, why do you want to use melafix? Do you have a sick/injured fish?

there's a fish in there that's missing half it's tail fin.

where/how exactly do i run the carbon? sorry, but i'm totally new to saltwater setups and the tank isn't mine.

also, if i run carbon, can i not do a water change, because to my understanding, the person in charge of maintaining the tank has never done a water change, only topped off evaporated water with non-dechlorinated tap water.

You can put it anywhere there is flowrate in the tank... Common places are in an HOB or canister filter, in a filter sock, in a women's nylon in a sump wall or near flowrate. All work just fine. And if you haven't ever water changed the tank, time to start doing so

what's involved in a water change for a marine setup? do i add salt? if so, what kind and how much of it? can i use dechlorinator for freshwater like tetra aquasafe or nutrafin aqua-plus?

SW water change.

Premix water and salt suffcient for change to the correct specific gravity and temp (same as tank norm being sg1.025 and temp 78f)
Chuck in a airstone or powerhead and mix for 24 hours.
Remove tank water and add fresh just make sure you add and remove the same amount of water.

Best to use RO water rather than tap with de-chlorinator due to the various problem elements in tap water that products like aquasafe can't remove/lock away

If it is easier most marine lfs sell premixed SW mine charge 15p per liter
