I'm looking to start an aquarium soon and had looked at the Jewel Rio 180 as the best fit because of the width given in the brochure but looking at the images of the cabinets I can almost certainly get a 240 in but I'm at work solid for the next 6 days and would love to have as much info as I can before I get the chance to go out and spend some money!

I know that the tank is 121cm wide as that is given in all the details but what I don't know is how wide the cabinet is at the base and at the middle (door handle height). It's an odd request I know but if anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Essentially the issue is that the alcove where it will go is wide enough to take the tank but about 60cm off the floor is a gas thing for the living room fire which sticks out of the wall a bit. If the cabinet was 121cm wide all the way down then it would fit but be very snug on that and the wall socket at the other end, if the cabinet was only say 110cm wide then suddenly there is enough room there to fit it in nicely and get me an extra 60 litres to play with!

Thanks!

I have a Rio 180 on a 240 stand.
The stand is 121cm wide where the tank sits, as well as on the base. There is a 15.5 cm "overhang" on both base and top from the cabinet...does that make sense?

Hi Nick thanks for the reply.

That overhang is at both ends I take it?

And can I ask how old that stand is? The ones on the shops and online seem to look different, with a door left and right and a centre section as a shelf like

Yeah the overhand is both ends. I got it second hand so can't say how old it is sorry but looking at the new style the overhang seems much less...

Thanks for your help anyway :)

While I have you cornered, does the wooden trim come off of the base and around the top? Lots of the second hand ones knocking about are beech and we'd prefer black so I might need to get handy with some paint!

No that's a good question. I'm not sure if the trim is removable. But I will be painting mine (again black, the beech looks a bit cheap IMO). Unsure what I will be using though! I will try and dig up a thread I saw on here of somone who painted theirs...
