let me know if u will post me a puffer my lfs are rubbish im in sw scotland cheers

Check out Wildwoods; Keith Lambert regularly has oddball puffers in stock, and while not the cheapest shop in England, Wildwoods does do mail order and has a good reputation among hobbyists. A quick look on the Tropical Fish Finder suggested they don't have T. abei in stock, but if you asked Keith, I'm sure he could get one for you.

Cheers, Neale

Always glad to help a pufferfish find a good home!

Tetraodon abei is one of the so-called target puffers. Care is much of a muchness for all of them. They don't swim about much, but do appreciate a tank with a soft substrate (ideally silica sand) and some plants around the edges. Moderate to strong filtration is recommended. They are all very aggressive, so are normally kept singly and away from tankmates, even catfish. Maximum length for this species is only 10 cm, so an aquarium around 150 litres should be adequate. Diet needs to be varied because of the thiaminase problem, so while a few mussels and prawns are fine, also provide them with foods that don't contain thiaminase, for example cockles, tilapia fillet and lancefish. As with all freshwater puffers these fish are adaptable to a range of water chemistry values but they are sensitive to old, dirty water; a 25% water change every week or two is essential. Avoid copper and formalin medications; instead, be aware that these puffers tolerate brackish water well, and that can be used to treat things like whitespot and velvet very easily.

so these must be kept in brackish water then? thought they were freshwater

are they agressive to say my hand if it was in the tank?

would u reccomend this kind of puffer then?

ive kept 2 dwarf pufers in the past and they were messy little so and so's

No, you misunderstand. They're freshwater fish, but if they get whitespot, treat with salt not copper or formalin. I've also found seawater dips very good for treating slime disease. At high concentrations, salt also works well against fungus and finrot. So my point being that it's easier to poison a puffer with copper and/or formalin than it is to stress them with salt.

Probably won't bite you, but I wouldn't try to tickle it's chin!

Yes, this is a good puffer for a reasonably experienced hobbyist. It's not as easy to keep as, say, Corydoras, but provided the aquarium is mature and you know how to feed predators, shouldn't cause any major headaches.

Yes, all puffers are messy; hence the need for heavy filtration.

i can recommend abei puffers i've got one and he's a great fish, mine is very active and is always out swimming unless he has eaten too much then he hides in his cave.
he is very aggressive and cannot be kept with any other fish, i have a ceylon and GSP's puffers and the abei is easily the more aggressive, i've been bitten about 3 times now by him, to be fair though each time i've been bitten i've just had my fingers dangling in the tank, if i put my whole hand in he just swims off and hides, he has a great appetite and will eat almost anything, excellent fish :)

Just thought I would pop by and mention I got my abei from wildwoods through mail order and he was perfect and healthy when arrived and pretty much eats anything. Keith was also very patient and helpful with the excited new owner. Best of luck :)
