Crazy idea came into my mind, and I thought I'd share. What if you cut into a filter sponge and put the roots of a plant in there. Will the plant take root all over the sponge? So pretty much instead of gravel, you use the sponge.

Although I haven't tried it, plants would most likely root into sponge. But I don't see any advantage of this over glass wool/coir in a plastic pot. Infact, the sponge may disintegrate as plants root into it.

The question in my mind is why? Unless you have a reason for doing otherwise, plants should be removed from the wool/whatever and the plastic pots. They should be planted into your substrate.

If you have digging fish or a shallow substrate, planting in pots is a good idea, but in that case, again, you should use a reasonable potting medium. Sponge/wool/whatever would be a poor choice.
