I see purple at the point of the dorsal, and at the base of the dorsal (on the body) . I guess I should have said I've never seen a chocolate cichlid with orange or purple. Mine only goes to different shades of brown.

He's not part flowerhorn, just trust me on that one. He looks exactly like some of the chocolate cichlid pics I've seen.... personally, I'd say that's what he is and all he is.
not having kept the species myself, I will say that it is is definatly a chocolate cichlid. this is where it gets tricky though. many moons ago, I know that there were 2 color morphs an orange and a purple color morph now if those two morphs are now considered seperate species I can't say.
yup most def its not a Fh, no red eyes, fins, long body and head not of a Fh.. its one of these >Hypselecara temporalisa chocolate cichlid? you guys must be joking! far too many characteristics missing. shape and fins are all wrong even if its a female. its nearer a synspillum that a choco
Cichlasoma synspilum
Hypselecara temporalis
Vieja synspilum
i definitely see more of the H. temporalis than i do the C. synspilum or the V. synspilum
--EDIT I--
one important thing to note is that the fish in question has red eyes--that could be an easy way to narrow down the possibilities.
--EDIT II--
dig those red synspilums; teh sexy!
