Aquamains (I think I got the name right) in greensboro. The service is subpar but the fish selection is usually allright and the fish are usually healthy. There's another petstore that I can't think of the name of. Maybe it's world of pet's or something. Anyway it's in a shopping center with really wide brick speedbumps in the parking lot. That one's got good selection and fish but again the help is very subpar. To be honest I've gotten the best service at petco in Greensboro. Several tanks there had under observation on them which is a good sign. They also have a decent selection of fish. I saw what appeared to be a white cloud long fin danio mix in one of the tanks there. It was stunning. I don't go to greensboro very often so I'm not up on the names I wish I could be more help.
edit: so If you want good healthy stock that you pick out yourself then go to aquamain's or world of pets. If you want honest advice on what goes with what then in my experience petco is the place to go.
I've heard about Aquamains but I haven't been there yet. I do intend on going sometime soon just to see what they have. I haven't been to Petco either, I didn't even realize there was one in the area. Definately will have to check it out. I go to Petsmart in High Point a lot, and they seem to have healthy fish and well kept aquariums. However, some of the people working there don't know much about fish keeping, etc.
I wish I was in the Charlotte area, so that I could have a larger variety of fish shops to go to. Unfortunately, it's a bit too far to check out any of the shops there unless I'm doing something else in that area. If you would like, rdd1952, you can give me 2 or 3 of your favorite shops and the next time I'm in the area I'll try to swing by them.
yea i am in the charlotte area also, i can give you my favorite, its in pineville, so if you are there then i will definatly offer it, they have a HUGE selection, anything you need they have, mariene, plant, freshwater, so many aqauriums, you cnat go wrogn there.
PM valleyrich. She's my sis and she lives in greensboro. It may be a couple days before she can get back to you but she can give you the name of every fish place in greensboro what's good and bad about them and directions to them if you need them. I'm not positive she'll be willing to help you out but she'd be a better person to ask than me.
Oddly enough, one of my favorite fish stores is the Petsmart on South Blvd. Their tanks are always clean and I have only seen one dead fish in their tanks in the last year. They have a young girl that works there who is pretty knowledgable about fish. Much more so than your average LPS employee who only knows how to net a fish.
Fintastics on South Tryon has a great selection, including SW. They also are pretty good in that when I first got my 75 gallon cycled and was ready to add the angels, they wouldn't sell me any because they were having a problem with theirs and some type slime they had on them. They were honest enough to tell me that they were afraid they wouldn't make it.
There is also a small, privately owned store in North Belmont (about 10 miles from Charlotte that is only open Wed. thru Sat. I totally trust his fish and never quarantine them from there.
Besides those, there are some more I have been to a couple times but never bought from. I don't know a lot about them. Frank and Pegs on S. Blvd., Petco on S. Blvd., Tropic Pets on Wilkinson Blvd., The Pet Store in Mt. Holly and another LPS near Walmart (WM is not a fish store) off S. Tryon but I can't think of the name of it.
ncstater, what is the store in Pineville and where is it at? I could probably make it over to that one on my lunch hour one day.
rdd, its called petland, they are a franchise but they do not act like one, it costs more to buy something, about 10% more than a petsmart, but better help. i think this is the one you are tlaking about, it is in the arbouruem (spelling), they have everything you could find, plus amny of the workers have 50 gallons, 75 gallons, except for this one guy that no's nothing aobut fish. you will like it, at least i do.
Thanks ncstater. I'll have to try to make it there one day on lunch. May be too far though unless I can take a long one. Have you ever been to Fintastics? Their equipment is extremely high and their fish are too but they do have a huge variety.
no i havnt, i have only been to a few pet stores, as i have found the store i like, ive been to the petland, the petsmart on independce, and the pet supermarket on independence, past the car dealerships if you are going um i dotn really no which direction, but i described it the best i could, as i dotn really no which direction it comes from.
I went to Aquamains yesterday just to see what they have. I have to say I'm satisfied with all aspects of it being a fish shop. The workers actually knew exactly what they were talking about. Big plus - no dead fish. They have a large selection of fresh and salt water fish, some freshwater fish I haven't even heard of. I'm glad I stopped in.
I think it's good to go in with a stupid grin on my face and walk around for a while looking at all the fish. Then I ask someone to help me. I tell them I have an empty 20 gallon at home that I'm thinking of filling up and I want a algae eater to put in it. See if he takes you to the common pleco tanks. Every time I've done this that is where I was taken.
