Hi there,

I'm looking for an Apple Snail to add to my freshwater aquarium. I'm in Sicily, so he'd have to come from UK for him to travel ok {and quickly so he wouldn't suffer}.

I would obviously pay for him and for shipping. If anyone has any offers can they let me know. Thanks a million.
:)

I did, but £10 is a bit expensive for postage. If no one here has any I'll get one of those.

Hurray, I finally found an Apple Snail in a shop today!! I'm delighted.

Yeah he only cost me 4 euro...about £3.
He came out of a tank that had fish in it so I'm afraid to add him to my 2 Fancies yet.
I have him in a bucket with water from my aquarium at the moment. When do you think i can add him, I'm frightened he'll be carrying somethig and will infect my fish.

Snails are a very poor host for most fish diseases. Most information that I have seen says that you do not need to quarantine them unless they are coming directly from the wild...

It's too bad you don't live in the US - I have well over a hundred baby apple snails that are going to need a new home *soon*! :)

what does an apple snail look like? I discovered 3 snails in my 29, TINY snails. I am sure they came from the plants I bought.

One is round and smaller than half a pea. the other two are cone shaped and about the size of the point of a large embroidery needle.

They are TINY

I'm very new to all of this too.
The cone shaped ones could be Malaysian Trumpet Snails. If they are you could be in trouble because they breed on their own....as in they don't need a partner to mate with....they have babies on their own....very fast!!
Do they look like this......................

If you think you have an Apple Snail, then he should look like this..................

Let me know what you find out, I'm curious! :)

Your worried about him carrying disease from the tank?
Just look at it this way...

When you buy new fish for your tank - you don't know they won't be infected with something. Just follow the same guidelines and precautions you use when you add new fishies to your tank! Should be OK.

Thanks, he's been in the tank for a couple of days now and he seems very happy....yay!

Yes, yes. The cone shaped one looks just like that. So I might have to do a round of snail killing when things get out of hand?? What is the best way to get rid of them? I have a 30 long.

The other snail is TINY too, and looks like it could be a baby apple. How fast do they grow? I would hate to kill him off too. :( Are there snails that are round that are NOT apples?

Yeah they are small and black?

I have 2 appel snails and they are massive lol, about the size in that pic from the link kila posted :)

The best advice I can offer you is to go to:

http://www.applesnail.net/

and click the "discussions" board, in that forum there is a thread dealing with only with "Population control / pest alert". I've just had a look and there is someone who has posted on there that has become over run with the Trumpet Snail.....check it out. If it's not helpful then post for advice, the people are very helpful and friendly....there is also a thread about snail identity so you have have your snail identified!!

Good luck and keep me posted on how you get on. :)
