so, as posted earlier in the week, my whisper60 on my 37g "died"... so i put my whisper20 on temp until i got another filter... i managed to save one of the foam inserts from my whisper60 that i put in my whisper20 so i wouldn't lose ALL my bacteria.

so yesterday i was feeling ambitious and i got that whisper60 working again. so i have that running again, but with all new cartridges and what not, so, gotta wait a while to get that bacteria again. (how long does it usually take anyway to get a decent colony established?)

so presently i have my whisper20 and whisper60 running together, for a total maximum filtration amount of about 405 gallons/hour. is this too much?, or is there no such thing as too much filtration?

let me know. so far my yellow lab seems to be enjoying all the surface water movement though! :)

IMO this is not overfiltered. The only problem is if the fish are being knocked around by the current, if not it should be fine.

I have a theoretical turn over of 14x per hour with one external and one internal an I have had no ill effects.

I know this question is not part of your topic but I wondered if you know much about biowheels I recently changed my filter to a penguin biowheel I am not sure if it is working properly becasue with my other filter the water got crystal clear and it has been 4 weeks now and there are still a bit of cloudy and little things floating aruond? Any suggestions? I have cleaned and all that the biowheel itself goes around a bit slow is this normal?

IMO you can't over filter an aquarim I have a 55 gallon tank and I have two filters pushing 600 GPH

What is your media for the biowheel? The biowheels themselves aren't media but a place for bacteria to colonize. It doesn't matter how fast the wheels spin, as long as they spin fast enough for it to remain wet, you'll be fine.

Per the OP, I'm in agreement with what the others mentioned. As long as it's not knocking the fish around with the current you'll be fine. I try to get filtration to turn my tanks over 10-15 times an hour. The #'s you see for GPH is actually higher than you'll ever get since it's not based on having the used media inside of the filter.
