i am a kinda new to tropical fish keeping had my 1st proper tank in june 04

look at my sig for details of size and of fish.

i bought a tropical tank set up with a 3ft tank heater light and a fluval 3 plus filter.

got artificial plants some stones and like a ornament of a piece of hollow bamboo.

was just wonderin if you had suggestions on how i could improve on my tank.

or jazz it up a bit i am looking for a river bottom theme so no castles or anything like that.

cheers

Try having your substrate at different levels, its easier to do if you have sand. I knew someone who used to put leaves in his Ganges river biotope, I cant remember how he did it but they were already dried and he did something to them to prevent them rotting in the water, I'll ask him and get back to you if you like.

Real plants always make a tank look better, as long as you have enough light for them. There are some real easy to grow plants that don't require too much light, you could try a few of them. I'd give you the names of the ones I have, but i'm afraid my memory would fail me and i'd screw it all up so maybe someone else could give some suggestions...

Hi Pricey001

What size tank do you have:- Height x width x depth ?

My 4 ft tank (48"x15x18) is set up with real plants, stones and a bubble wall on the back wall of the tank.

Using real plants they move in the current (I have a fluval 4 and another powerhead filter that came with the tank)

In my second tank (48x12x12) similar set up

In my 3rd tank (18x12x10) just a couple of cuttings from the plants (filtration is a box filter)

4th tank (12x10x10) very basic set up as a hospital / quarantine tank.

What you say you have is roughly what I expect you would find at the bottom of a river.

Have you got sand or gravel on the bottom - I`ve got gravel (mixed colours but primarily a mixture of browns with the majority a light brown to show the fish off)

Hope this helps

Phil
