Any Fluval 205 Owners Out There That Can Help Me ?

i have a fluval 205 on my 4 foot tank but its not doing very well, so i put an internal filter in too.
the problem is that the output on the 205 is very poor and has no pressure when it comes out of the outlet pipe.

i just wondered if anyone has had any experiance with these filters and knows how much pressure should come out the hose as mine is less than my internal filter.
i have cleaned the filter out properly today but no difference. also the hoses are both the same length at about 3 foot.

do these filters lose power after a while and is there anything that can be done to repair them?

Ummm, just going to ask the simple question...you've made sure the black handle on the top of the filter is all the way down???...if it's pointing up, it will cut off pretty much all water flow.

hi, yes the black lever is all the way down(on full)? any ideas?

I had a Fluval 205 on my 20G tank and sometimes it would act up - did you make sure that the filter was completely empty before you set it up? I know when I clean my Fluval out for maintenance if it is even halfway full of water when I hook it up and compress the plunger for the canister to fill up with water it will filter out very poorly because of air in the filter. Make sure the canister is completely empty and hook up the lines and compress the plunger a few times to get the air out - once you get it started just wait until the output nozzle stops bubbling. Plug the filter in and watch the output nozzle - it might spurt out random bursts of bubbles but should eventually even out once all the air is out.

Might want to make sure that you don't have any kinks in your lines and that the lines are hooked up correctly (intake to the in port, and output nozzle to the out port). Also how is the condition of the impeller? Fluvals use ceramic rods for the impeller so they are prone to break after awhile. I know with the 205 you have to use the special removal tool to take the ceramic rod out so make sure you have that before you even attempt to take the rod out for inspection.

the filter isnt supposed to be below the water line les than 1.4m/ 4.5foot . Have you tried cleaning the intake/ outake pipes, this can also help. What size in litres is your tank, they only do up to 200l/ 40UK g

Quite puzzling then??? maybe the motor needs changing.

motor cannot be changed as it is a sealed unit.

Might be an idea to check the impellor for any muck etc. give it a good clean.

I had the same problem 4 months ago. The order you put the media in can be an issue, if not, what i did was check the black seal around the edge. If there is a small leak in the seal, the pressure of the filter is lost. I replaced my seal and it was back to full power straight away

Other than the pipes have you taken the filer apart fully and cleaned it, I have a 205 & a 305 and every 2 months they get slow and weak but I find that clearing the intake tube (round the ball valve thing) then getting gunk off the impeller and the lid fixes it. A working filter should start to fill when the black lever goes down before turning it on as long as the water level stays in the outlet pipe (I had a problematic primer once and I had to fill the pipe before plugging it back in)
If that doesn't work I would suggest going to the manufacturer if the warranty is still valid.. I believe they are quite good warrantys
