Have been running a tropical tank for the last couple of years but recently had an outbreak of something that literally took out my entire stock - was very confusing as fish showed no signs of disease/stress and water stats were normal. it all happened within a week...

I'm now in the process of stripping down/cleaning the tank to start afresh and wanted to try some 'fancies'. I've just been through the 'types of goldfish' post and found it very interesting, but it didn't however really advise what size tank you'd require for keeping them!

What type (if any) would be suitable to keep in a UK 20g tank? Obviously I want to get the right type for the size of my tank so am looking fo any advice!

Cheers,
Barry

Bubble eye goldfish are the smallest growing variety of fancy goldfish at only about 5inches long, you could keep a couple in a 20gal long tank depending on what its measurements are :thumbs: . They come in a variety of colors/patterns;

Most other types of fancy goldfish grow a fair bit larger at 7-9inches on average, so you'd only be able to keep one in a 20gal (possibly two though depending on the tanks measurements and what variety goldfish you get :) ).

I was going to suggest bubble-eye goldfish too. They're not for everyone though - some people aren't keen on the bubbles

if you do keep them make sure the tank is bubble-eye safe - no sharp objects etc - the eyes can be punctured.

Would a bubble-eye be happy in a 20g tank or would he need a larger tank in a few year?

They would be fine in a 20gal, they're the smallest growing variety of fancy goldfish, personally i would recommend a pair of them for a 20gal (since they do enjoy some company of their own kind) :thumbs: .
