Any Benefits Of Purple Lighting?

Hi there,

I have recently taken up the fish keeping hobby and have a new 980 Aqua One aquarium.

The aquarium has three fluorescent lighting bars, two being white and one being purple.

I'm a little confused as to why there is a purple light? Is there a particular purpose for this? My friend said the purple light us used for night time lighting and allows the fish to sleep while not distrubing them as much. He suggested I keep it on overnight and use the white lights during the daytime.

Any thoughts? I just want to know the benefits of using the purple light.

The purple light is for bringing out the colors of the fish. Don't leave it on at night. Moon lights are small l.e.d's in either blue or white that you would leave on at night.
