Hi all, I started keeping tropical fish about 2-3 weeks ago. The previous occupant of the tank was a goldfish. The tank is about 175 litres. So far I have added some new plants, 4 Rosy Barbs, 8 Black Neon Tetras, 3 Peppered Catfish and 1 tiny Angelfish.

The problems I'm having is that the Rosy Barbs are eating my plants at an alarming rate also the angelfish seems to be trying to attack the Black Neon Tetras. Does anyone have any idea what I should do about this?

Thanks :)

My advice isn't the best nor am I an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but...

Some fish like to eat some kinds of plants, I lost three plants to a few of my fish before I figured out a kind they wouldn't munch that looked good in the tank for hiding places!

As for the angelfish, I believe angelfish are pretty aggressive, at least from what I've seen. Might be a good idea to find a way to separate it from the other fish or something.

If the barbs are eating your plants then you will have to choose between one or the other. Or try some slightly hardier plants. Anubias would be an example of a hardier plant.

Also the angels will eat the tetras. They aren't being agressive, it's just they see them as a suitable food source. You will need to choose between the angels and the tetras. You can keep tetras with angels, just not thin bodied ones like neons.

How young are the black neons?

I'm surprised at the angel attacking the neons, especially as you say the angel is still small.

Angels are normally ok with black neons as they grow larger than the standard blue neons.

Are the angels actually attacking the neons are just chasing them about?

Thanks for the tips guys, much appreciated. I will probably try and pick up some hardier plants soon, what about artificial plants? Are they ok?

I'm not quite sure how old the black neons are, they're about an inch long though and quite plump, the angelfish isn't much bigger than a 50 pence piece. It doesn't seem to be damaging them or anything, but it's going for them when they swim near it.

If the angel isnt harming the neons or stressing them out too much then I would just monitor the situation.

By the time the angel has grown large enough to possibly eats the neons, the neons should have grown large enough not to be bothered.
