My daughters 5 gal. was finally ready and we were heading to the lfs last night to get a male betta for it...well she convinced me that instead of the lfs we should go to WalMart because they look so unhappy there in those little cups.

So she now has a new betta and couldn't resist the little dwarf frog they had there as a friend.

It's actually a pretty tourqoise blue...she named it Joey??????

She named it Joey? Does the fish come up to the glass and say "How you doin'!" :)

It actually wouldn't suprise me though. My betta, who bears the oh-so-masculine name of Lacey (blame my ex-girlfriend for that one  ), used to look at me like he wanted to beat the crap of me when I first got him. He's mellowed out now, but he still gets that "I'm gonna crawl out of this tank and tail-smack you upside the head if you don't hurry up and give me some dried bloodworms, human!" look from time to time.

Ah, another person suckered in by Walmart. Most walmarts that have fish in them are not very well kept. And some people (feeling sorry for the poor fishies) try to rescue them and give them a better life. Most of the time it ends up with dead fish and money in walmart's pockets. If the fish look miserable in ill kept tanks PLEASE don't buy them. It only keeps the practice going. Places that don't keep good care of their fish will never improve their conditions if they aren't forced to. By boycotting such stores you can remove money from their pockets and give that money to people that really care about their fish.

See I told you I HATE Wal-Mart. Now if I could get my wife to go some where else !!!! ???
Signed,
Sondan

Hummm.....FanOFish, why am I suspicious of the cute little dwarf frog you bought at WalMarts? -_-

Well, it could just be that I don't trust WalMart's fish (not to mention their business ethics in general) :/ or it could be that sometimes people buy baby African Clawed Frogs thinking that they are African Dwarf Frogs and will stay little and cute forever.

They are both really nice frogs, don't get me wrong. I have both of them and love them to bits. It's just that the African Dwarf frogs only grow to be about 1 1/2 inches long while the African Clawed frogs get MUCH larger. Large enough, in fact, that I know of one that ate someone's fully grown cory cat.

Anyway, it's easy enough to tell which one it is. There are many other indicators, but look at its hands. If it has webbing between its fingers, it is a dwarf and you are in luck. If it has long pointy fingers with no webbing in between, it might be a good idea to start thinking about a future home in a larger tank.

In either case, be sure the tank is covered---they are jumpers!

I cannot agree more! I would never buy one of their horribly ill fish.

Guppy Monkey thanks for your concern and although I would tend to agree with all the fish in their tanks, I'm not sure the same hold true with Bettas. I don't think I've seen a happy looking Betta anywhere because they all seem to be stuck in little bowls.

Inchworm - I knew enough to tell the difference and we did get a dwarf frog. However, they also sell Albino African Frogs that are not dwarfs.

Both betta and frog seem to be doing well, we had a bubble nest on the second day and the betta has learned to ignore a floating frog
