I'm sure this is a continuously asked question . I have searched he internet and found way too many variations on sizing the mass of fish to tank size .
I have a tank that is 92cm ( 36.22" ) X 41cm (16.14") X 55cm (21.7")
The surface area is therefore 3772 sqcm ( 584.6" sq ) .
The most common is sqcm/40 = mass of fish ( which would equate to 94.3cm ( 37.125" ) . Yet others range between 45" and a staggering 60" .
I would be extremely grateful if someone could clarify .
Many thanks ,

Okay, so you're asking how many fish you can put in your tank?

According to the dimensions you gave, your tank is 55 US gallons (207 liters). My general rule is 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish, and then a few more. So for example, I have a three gallon tank and in it I have four approx. 1 inch fish. But I also just have an average filter system for filtration. If the tank is already cycled and you have enough dissolved oxygen you can put even more fish in…

Thanks Laura .
so 50" to be safe after cycling .
Life saver as I had just read another suggesting up to 123.8" !!!
Thanks a million .

Warren

The 1" per gallon rule works pretty good for starters with a couple exceptions as Laura Ilario said. Fish like plecos, oscars and goldfish are very messy so they don't apply. Most things say 1" per 2 gallons of water for goldies. Even that may be too much. Also, the 1" per gallon rule is based on adult fish size so make sure you stock based on the size they will grow to, not on the size they are when you buy them. What fish do you want to put in the tank? What type filter/filters do you have?

Edit: Corrected typo of 1" per gallon. I think 1' per gallon as I originally posted would "slightly" overstock a tank.

Noted about the fish sizes . Thanks to everyone for their help ( would never consider gold fish , oscars or plecos ) . I'm also assuming the length does not include the tail ?
Thanks .

That is correct, tail not included, body only.
