Man, the longer this rock is in the tank, the more i'm seeing. its great! this one looks like a starfish with 7 legs. I googled around, but to my untrained eye, they all look similar :( so maybe one of you can help me id this guy.

Asterina star.

Some say good some say bad. Personally i had thousands of them in my system with no ill efects.

Yup...I've got loads of em too

Lovely little things. Seem to sit in one place for a day or so, then they're gone! Mine are tiny tiny little things. Sooooo cute

Agreed, Asterina star. But as Nav pointed out, many claim they do eat coral, and once their population grows, they are hard to eradicate. Watch your corals. :good:

To clarify, there are two species of "asterina stars" that look nearly identical. Probably 95% of the time you get the normal boring algae/detritus eating variety. The other 5%, you get the coral eating variety. I have a bunch in my tank, things bred like bunnies. Quick rule of thumb, if you see them cruising the glass, they're the algae eating kind, if you never see them on the glass... Then you might have the coral eaters. Just keep an eye on them
