yet another dead koi today but with symtoms??

the eyes are popping out
there's a sore on the anal hole
one of the pelvic fins are missing
at the front of the dorsal fins there was signs of fungus and it now shows the bone there being sharp to touch.

as its only died in the last few hours I could get some pictures to help you diagnose???

this was the Doitsu Ohgon which was the next smallest Koi we had.

Another disease I am afraid and by the sound of things some of the other fish picked up on it. It sounds as though internal parasites may have caused and then developed into velvet, fungus or fin rot ultimatly leading to an early death. Sorry to hear that but I would certainly test the water now and keep a close eye on any other new fish and the current stock.

well we were going to the get a new koi tomorrow but we can't introduce new fish if the there's a chance of water infection.

my mum treated it for fungus when she first saw it during thr day when I was at college.

i'll get some advise off the guy and the watewr tester to see whats up.

i tried to catch the other new koi to give them the once over but they were having none of it!! Only managed to net the albino gras carp by accident but boy it looks great!!

I'm worried for my freshly released fry now, but surely they would of had it before the 2nd koi being smaller :/

Young Koi are generally more vunerable than fish like Rudd and Grass Carp who are hardier natives. You either brought the Koi with internal parasites which has then developed or you have something wrong with your water. I wouldn't advise adding any more fish until the problem is sorted.

Righty then, i'll get to the shop early morning to get on top of the problem quickly.

when i suggested i bought the fish infected he said that he hasn't had any problems with the rest of batch saying that if one did they all would of.

he said about a case when he first started up there and put it down to a new system which he overstocked too quickly, and had put his hands up to returning customers!!

I don't want it to be him as I'm going to feel so awkward suggesting it was from there again. guess i do the tests etc then see what happens.

if it was the fish would the parasite have spread to other non-infected koi/fish

If it is internal parasites - the most common is the koi tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, a long, fine, white ribbon-like worm found in tangled masses in the intestine. The worm will re-appear in the fish because it is transmitted by tiny crustaceans living in the ponds, but only heavy infestations are of concern.

in me book it says to get the fish treated by a vet if there infected with tape worm............or is that the extreme cases?

also should i remove the new koi for a while to keep a closer eye on them?

i have a large tank I could put them in.

Yep unfortunatly the Vet is the only person who can help you if they have tapeworm.

:-(

i managed to check the other koi over this morning and they seem fine, the last one showed popping eyes first, which I should of picked up on

My Mums adoment about treating the pond for fungus but I'm not sure if it was, there was only a very small part of the dorsal fin that had rotted away, but on fuzz any where else.

what do you reakon about quarantining the new Koi/ghost koi?

Have you brought a new fish? If so yes I would quarantine him/her for sure in the other pond or tank until you have tested the water and got to the bottom of the problem.

No new fish, but i was thinking put the current small koi in the tank to keep a closer eye on them as there pretty good at playing hide and seek!!

I can't transfer to the other pond as it's all the same water!! the pumps in the bottom pond with pumps water into the top pond then there's a water fall from the top to the bottom.

also by doing water tests what can I achieve?

Water tests will tell you whats wrong. :sly: By buying a test kit you can test the parameters to see if it is your pond that is causing the disease, if so you can then perform water changes etc to rectify the problem, water test kits are very useful and should always be used in a Koi pond especailly one with disease. I wouldn't remove any of the other Koi as the stress may aid the disease causing them to become infected.

oki dokey :)

what should the water be replaced with....rain water or tap water?

we have a very large rain water tank by the way B)
