my 2.5" Ancistrus sp. cf. hoplogenys (silk pleco) was killed today by a baby 1.5" rainbow sharl. I only bought the pleco saturday and he is gone already  I keep 1 rainbow and one albino rainbow and they have always been dosile. I noticed the rainbow bullying the pleco a little bit but the pleco would raise his dorsal fin and turn on the shark and it would scurry away.

my roommate just called me and said the shark had been chasing the pleco around the tank all morning his fins are shredded and finally he just died (probably from a heart attack form stress)

I am soo sad. I loved that little guy. it almost makes me want to get rid of the shark but I love him too. maybe I need to buy a 5" pleco that will stick up for it's self. I'm not a big fan of the common plecs, but the exotics are really neat. I was going to get a L18 Gold nugget but I am afraid to spend that much on something that may get chewed to shreds. the Silks or Ancistrus sp. cf. hoplogenys look just like a gold nugget but are bristled and have white instead of yellow.

sorry to hear about your fish loss!

when i grow out plecs, i usually put them in my sump of my wet dry during the day and tansfer them abut an hour after lights out. plecs are nocturnal. then in the morning transfer him back to the sump til he gets too big to fit in the sa/ca's mouths. have no problems.

did youhave any hidey holes for him?

Sorry about your loss Tanked  ...sounds like your shark is a bit of an A**hole...maybe he needs a dither fish to keep him occupied, something quick like danios or barbs?

Sorry 'bout your loss tanked, its always hard to lose a fish.

he's got his cousin (the albino) they are supposed to hate each other but they shoal together. the Rainbow will shoal with my pristella tetras too but I Know he is just sizing them up for when he is big enough to eat them. I decided when I switched to semi-agressive that they would be good healty food for fish eaters. I may get a Pictus or 3 when the sharks get a little bigger and I'm sure they would swallow the pristellas whole.

take the agressive fish out of the tank for a couple of days or even a week if you can, rearrange the rocks before you reintroduce them and everything should work out fine.
It worked for me and I now have a 8" cichlid living peacefully with tetras less than 1".
