went to maidenhead aquatics in cwmbran on thursday, walked round to see their bettas ...

All of them (about 15) were in tanks next to each other!!

I asked one of the guys why they were all in tanks next to each other as there were free tanks that they could have been put in... he told me...

'They will all be sold by Sunday/Monday, so it doesnt matter!'

I coudln't believe it, they get their betta delivery on a wednesday so they are next to each other for upto 5 days. Surely this is bad for them?

I watched them for a while and alot of them were flaring upto each other through the glass. There were a few dead ones in the tanks as well

its not realy a problem haveing males nexted to each other as they soon calm down but the dead ones are a worrie

I thought having all the males in tanks next to each other was bad for them?

They would be constantly flaring :/

sometimes it can be but most breeders i know keep males nexted to each other and they soon calm down but then when u do want them to flair they wont lol coz they dont

I suppose they could have just put some paper between the tanks so the bettas don't see each other though...

the could have but from a sellers veiw they think that if the males can see each other they look biggar due to there finnage and the more frustrated they get the more colourfull they are

Whatever, just as long as they're not in cups

In two out of the four LFS I visit regularly they always keep their bettas floating in plastic fish bags each with about 1L of water, all lined up next to each other. Lot's of flaring going on! I don't know how often they change the water but, one that I saw had been in the same bag at least two days, unfed and with bad fin rot...needless to say I 'rescued' him when I saw he was still in the same 'dirty' water. He's recovering very well :D

The thing is, this particular shop always has six or so empty tanks which could house bettas extremely well, no need for barracks, each with their own tank! (they only have half a dozen at any one time).
