i am looking to put a new fish in my tank and i like the angle but
i need to no will it be ok with my fish
i have
6 cherry barbs
4 sunset platts
3 clown loach
5 molles
12 neons
1 pleco
the tank is well planted lots of caves, bog wood and bubbles
is this ok for a angle

How big is your tank?

Eventually, the angelfish will eat the neons.

 Big whopping NO! The barbs will nip the feelers off of the angels. I have neons with my angels now and they don't bother each other, possibly because they have room not to run into each other. But, the angels don't pay any attention to them. I may have to move the tetras later if the angels start harrassing them.

But, do not put angels in a tank with faster swimmers. Barbs are usually aggressive, whereas angels are not unless they are breeding.

Also, mollies have a tendency to chase the angels constantly! Found this out by accident. :*)

Check out Compatible Fish.

Cherry barbs are nothing like tiger barbs and are completely non-aggressive. In fact, they are absolutely ideal fish to keep with anything delicate with long finnage - have some in with my betta. They are wonderful fish!

Cherry barbs are also shy, relatively slow swimmers that are good with tetras and gouramis (I know this from experience). They do like plenty of hiding places, however. I always recommend them to newbies to the hobby as they are very easy.

Actually, cherry barbs are so unaggressive they can be victims of aggressive fish - my male cherry has a missing tail due to a red-tailed black shark that used to live in his tank (I inherited him from his previous owner). However, he still gets about by wiggling his body rather more than the typical, tailed variety. Hey, maybe he's a Manx Cherry?

Kissifish - your post just serves to further prove to me that there are no hard and fast rules in fish keeping... a school of neons in with my adult angels wouldn't last ten minutes. However, I keep a school of tiger barbs with the same pair of angels with great success and virtually no scuffles. Actually, I was watching that tank last night and realized that the tiger barbs are at the bottom of the pecking order in that tank! The angels and loaches definitely give them the bizz, and even my pearl danios give chase to the tigers for sport.

my tank isn't that big but big enought to and 1 angle
i was thinking about my neons and forgot about that how ever my neons are not that big seeing i had them for about 4 months now will the angle still eat them

You didn't answer my question. How big is your tank? Even one adult angelfish requires quite a bit of space, and if kept in a tank which is too small, your angelfish can be stunted and deformed.

It doesn't matter how big your neons are.... eventually your angelfish will be big enough to make a meal out of them. Experienced fishkeepers can manage to keep the most unlikely tankmates with great success, but it's not recommended that you put neons and angels together. Neons comprise a large part of the angel's diet in the wild.

my tank is 49 gallon
i don't think i'm that good yet might give the angle a miss or if i can talk to my wife nicely see if i can get a small ish tank just to put a angle in
as for this tank might just put 6 or 7 guppys in i like them just as much :D
thanks for all you help :hyper:

Ack! 49 gallons is PLENTY big enough for an angelfish! You could get a pair. In fact, I'd think that in 49 gallons, you'd have a number of months before the angelfish/neons would be an issue - if it's well planted, you could get away with it indefinitely. Angels are actually very hearty fish, and are undoubtedly one of my favourites. I was just really scared you were going to say you wanted to put an angel in a ten gallon tank!

What works for some may not work for others. Give it a try and keep watch on them. If it doesnt work you could always return the fish.

:) Hi focus,
I just read your post. And may I add, Since I have kept angles for about 18 years that you would be fine to keep that all together. As long as you tank the angles out when ready to pair off. How many and at what size was you thinking about getting? And you stated that you have a tank well decorated with caves and plants. What kind of plants? Artifcial or live? The Angles are not an agrresive fish UNTILL ready to spawn. At one time I had 25 breeding pairs of angels. I have downsized do to my mother & father inlaw wanted to start raising them too. So I helped them into getting pairs at the start. So I am now down to 17 pairs. I thought that it would help me make room for my spawns. And that it did. Now I am back to needing more room already. But I have seen the angels rip a very good live plant into shreds just to have a place to spawn. So may I suggest that you could keep the angels just fine. But if you want to keep a nice tank, raise the spawn, and keep the fry. Then put the pairs into a tank of their own. A ten is ok :shifty: But a 15gallon :D would give them more room and make them alot happier. If you prefer to keep them in the communitty tank then they would get very aggresive with the smaller fish, only when they were ready to spawn. I hope this has helped.......Tom & Linda

Now thats alot of breeding pairs. I currently have 3 and find myself searching for more room. Presently I have koi, silver and marble spawns totaling close to 1500 fry and juvies. Looking to possibly adding chocolates to my program. Of course there will always be another type Ill want to add. Im also conditioning 2 pairs of bettas, 1 pair of melano crowntails and the other pair are Wal-Mart rescues. A few of my lfs have inquired about guppies so that may be on my list as well.

Angel fish eat neons so that whats happened to mine  8)

Tom & Linda,
Great information, I have a question for you if you read this. I'ld like to ask you how you have your tanks set up. I have a bunch of tanks that I am waiting to have stands built. Mostly ten gallon tanks a few bigger ones. My question is filtration. What kind of filtration do you use in your tanks?
