i have a 30 gall. tank with a rhino plec, 4 platys, 1 striped cory and 1 angel...i have a HOB filter, an internal filter and a base filter...i have bout 8 live plants and 1 drift wood...and i have a thick layer of soil pellets covering the plants...jus recently i noticed my angel fish was not eating and becoming more inactive...he used to eat bout 7-8 bloodworms but a few days ago he was only eating 2 and since ytd, he wasnt eating at all...he has a black-brown area on his head and it isnt his stripes...jus an area of blackish-brown area on his head. half of its dorsal and anal fin are black, which extends to his tail and i also noticed that a small portion of it has been slightly discoloured...

ammonia:0

nitrite:0

nitrate: about 15 ppm

gh, kh and ph: not sure...

pls help!...im worried sick for my angel..

How old is the angel.
The patch on the head does it look fluffy in appearance.
Black patches can be ammonia burn that are healing.
Black patches can also be fighting wounds, ammonia burns, to cancer.
Brown patches can be velvet, to columnaris, or brown growths like cluster of berries or look like a cauliflower can be lymthocsystis.

i have no idea how old it is...but i had it for bout 2 mmonths now...it does not have a fluffy appearance but it seems to be sort of on the skin or inside...i do not know if it is caused by ammonia as my ammonia lvl has been zero...and it most prob cant be caused by aggression...it does not seemed to be a growth...i'll try to upload a pic soon...oh btw..happy birthday

Shine a torch on the angel with tank lights out just to make sure it dosn't glow up a golden colour.
As a brown varnish colour on fish can sometimes be velvet.
Is the angel showing any signs of flicking and rubbing against objects.
Have you seen an aggressive behavour in the tank.
I would also post this thread in the angel part of the forum to see if they could shed some light on what's
going off with the angel fish.

If the angel showing no signs of flicking and rubbing against objects I would issolate him and try
a bacterial med.
You can also soak garlic juice in there flakes or pellets it helps to stimulate there appetite and boost the
fish immune sytem.

oh no...it is velvet...when i shine a torch....the area turned gold...like lots and lots of gold dusts have been sprinkled...omg i have got a velvet infection in my tank..but on the bright side...at least i have diagnosed the illnes...so now how do i cure it??? do i need to transfer it to a hospital tank or do i treat the whole tank? i do not see my other fishes with gold dusts...anw a big thanks to u

no..it does not rub against objects..as for flicking, i have no idea what that is...lol..

When a fish have parasites it will rub it's self on things in the tank and flick like something irratating the fish.
If the fish is not rubbing it's self on things in the tank it might not be velvet.
When humans have an itch they scatch it for relief but fish will rub on things in the tank.

so if thats the case...then what is it...i think i'll observe for bout 2 more days and if its rubbing, i'll go to my LFS and get a treatment right away...if its not then we have another problem.. :p ...

If the fish is not eating not good news as you know.
If the fish is flicking and rubbing like something is irratating it I would issolate the fish and
try a bacterial med.
Got to go now going out.

If the fish is not flicking and rubbing against things in the tank I doubt its velvet.,
If you go to fish store pick a bacterial med up and a parasite med just in case.

ok...i have confirmed that it is velvet as i saw the angel rubbing on the driftwood lots of times and jus a moment ago, it got entangled in one of my water plants, after i free it, it just stayed at the bottom of my tank.what do i do now...i feel like im gonna suffer a panic attack..cant wait till tomorow to cure it...now how do i treat it?...pls reply wilder..or anyone else with experience...thanks a whole lot! :good:
