I've read angelfish are compatible with most tetras, depending on the size. I have neons ranging from .75 inch to 1.50 inch. Would angelfish get along with my neons? The neons are living inside a 30 gallon tank ( 10 neons ). I plan on getting about 2 angelfish.

Another question, How can you tell the age of angelfish by their size? ie: quarter size = 5 months old, nickel size = 3 months old, 5 inches all around = 2 years old, ect

Thank you!

neons will get eaten for sure
age is difficult as the rate in which they grow depends largely upon many different variables so it is hard to say what age they will be

I have seen neons live with angels as long as the neons are full size before the baby angels are introduced. I have a couple of neons still going from a set up a few years ago, unfortunately while I was in hospital most of the shoal died due to poor husbandry of the tank. Still makes me sad but I can't point blame at anyone, the other half has decided she wants to take a bigger interest in fish now so she is doing most of the day to day stuff and is doing very well so I think I am in good hands if I go back in to hospital, anyway we are housing 2 small angels until they are big enough to go into a breeding tank with some other angels my mother has and see if we can get a pair between us. So far they have never even acknowledged the neons and should we keep the angels (the only reason we aren't sure is the neons were our first fish and we feel we owe it to them) and there is a problem we will re house the neons in my mothers tetra tank.
On the whole I have always been told that an angel will eat a smaller fish if s/he can so it might not be worth the risk.

Weither the neons and anglefish will have a feud is kind of depending on the size of the tank.

There is a show tank at my local fish store that is 90 gallons that has them both in it and they are fine. I asked ;)

My tank is 350L, which is about 77 UK gallons I think so maybe I won't have a problem. The neons tend to skulk about at the bottom rear corner area of the tank and always have done. Makes a case for keeping the angels though.

I'm very interested in this thread. I've just setup a new tank a few weeks ago. I've got 40 neons in it so far and plan to get angels too. It's a 260 litre tank (approx 57gals). Maybe i should have second thoughts? :good:

I beleive that i once read somwhere that neons are THE natural food source for angels in the wild. Though i do recall a guy on here who once claimed to have kept the two species together without any problems.

Yeah, 40 neons is really nice to see. I'll post pics soon, just been too busy.

I read somewhere that neon fry are a food source. I will have a look through a few books tonight and see what I can dig up.

I'm afraid I can't give you an answer as suck to your question, but I have an angelfish in with 5 black neons and 2 colombian redfins - there will be more when lfs has more in, andyway my anglesh is about 1.5 inch and my black neons are the same, so I'd say by the time he is anywhere near big enough to eat them they'll be bigger.
They are all alot faster than him at the moment too!

btw I have an 81l uk tall

xXx

I am sure I have read that and it makes sense seeing as they both live together in the wild, the Amazon specifically if I am not mistaken. Im sure it could work in some cases, but why risk it?

dont put them together at all they can and will kill every neon tetra in your fish tank and the angelfish is the neons natural predator so they will hastle your neons
