The truest, most effective trick is to watch them spawn and see who lays the eggs. I am very skeptical when people claim to be able to sex angels from photos.
Most people planning to breed them buy 6, see who pairs and rehome the others. I know commercial angel breeders who have made mistakes sexing angels.

Just when you think you’ve figured out how to tell boys from girls in Angelfish you’ll find out you are wrong . Like Gary said , get a half dozen , grow them out and let a pair form up .

They look a little young. How long have you had them? Angels take 8 months to a year to get old enough to spawn. Almost impossible to tell male from female until they spawn. Even then hard to tell until the eggs hatch as sometimes two females will pair up and lay eggs.

Along this same train of thought, can they be sexed the same as Tilapia??? Males have one “vent”, and females have 2 “vents”… on smaller fish, it my require magnification, and a dye on a cue tip to see, but there is a physical difference, that can be see, but requires more detail, than can be achieved from pictures

I've never tried venting angels, but I'm told it is imprecise and difficult. It's said to be easy to make mistakes. Plus the fins being what they are, it's very easy to injure them while trying.

I knew an older man who battled alcoholism and built a hatchery to keep obsessively busy. He lived in that fishroom. He bred and sold thousands of angels for a few years, and said he could sex them from behaviour in groups, and that was it.

I can sex MY angels from photo because i know the male/female trait for MY angels. However for a random angel i'm only right about %75 of the time - there are certain traits like thickness in lower region; hump in the head overall size but a lot of it is genetic so with the right gene a female might have a large head hump or a male might have a fatter lower region. However for the ones i breed or buy from the same seller there is a well defined pattern - cept when there is a rare exception ;)

Having said that i definitely have 3 males and 2 females in one aquarium and 3 males with a female in another. Sadly the pinoy female chose the platinum male instead of the pinoy male.

Anyway all that said these photos are lousy and i'm not going to comment on them; rather i think i'll sit her watch my angels traverse 10 feet to the other side of the tank so they can have a powwow fight before they come back over here.

This is my very nice male and if you say anything bad about him i'll tell him and he'll come over and beat you up; after all it is not his fault it is a lousy photo; he is 3 years old and 5 1/2 inch from nose to tail.

@op if you look at the lower region of the fish you see a little thing sticking down. If it is fat and straight it is a female; if it is narrow and slightly angled it is a male.

Usually they can breed for the first time from 9 to 14 months after the egg hatches. So if you know when the egg hatch and how long it has been that will give you a good idea.
