HI!

I have a 63 gallon tank and there are some guppies in there already. I knoe angels aren't supposed to be with neons cause they will eat them but you think it could work with guppies? I would of course get a juvie angelfish.
I know some of you wrote about keeping neons and angels togeter without problems - how did you do it? Did it work every time with every angelfish or just sometimes?

Also I know that breeding pairs are very territorial that is why I am not keen on getting a pair. But because it is impossible to tell sexes in juvies would it be OK if I only had one angelfish? Or would it get lonely?

mmmmm. can only draw on my own experiences. I had an angel and guppies, and I think it was about a fortnight before the angel polished off the lot of guppies. From my experience I would say...no.

there is a good chance that the angel will eat the guppies

I put a juvie angel with guppies, neons, cardinals and didnt have any problems. Its now fully grown and still just swims along side them. BUT I added another 6 neons to increase the shoal- and the angel killed every one of the new fish!! Weird....maybe the old ones are all friends...

I once had a gourami like that. It grew up with a small shoal of neons and when I tried to up the size of the shoal the gourami killed each and every new one, but left the old ones alone.

Thats the great and sometimes puzzling thing about cichlids. Each fish has is very own quirks and personality. To say a genenralization about a species can usually make the person who made the statement look foolish, but it is not the persons fault, it is just that we try to make generalizations about a species to make certain behviors easier to understand. There is a good chance that angels will eat any small shoaling fish in the tank with them, but that is not always the case as shown by some members experience. Also, I keep a shoal of giant danios and khuli loaches in with my full grown male JD. And I actually think he is more afraid of them then they are of him, even though they could easily be snacks for him. So, it just comes down to the individual fish when your talking about cichlids.

Ox :good:

the old tankmates not being eaten and new tankmates being eaten issue, i've seen them on other fishes before. fishes that were often with the subject since young would often stand less of a risk being seen as food.

It can be done and done successfully. I say go for it. If you do be sure to establish your colony of neons first. Then introduce the juvenile angels.
