when people say a dying anemone will "nuke your tank" what does this mean i guess it is bad.
i assume it could be the anemone releasing it's poison is the assumption right

Some animals leach poison when they die, but I think anemones just rot, producing lethal levels of ammonia and nitrite.

I wouldn't reccommend most species of Sea Anemone for aquariums - your a master if you can keep them alive for 2 years... but even still, they can live for hundreds of years in the wild, an aquarist can't even live long enough to see the anemone get that old!

When they are kept in undesirable conditions, they slowy bleach and die. When they die, they go bad really quick. Even a large system would suffer at the loss of an anemone. Sometimes they can walk into a position where the aquarist wont beable to reach them, making removal even harder. When they do go, like Lynden stated, they go quikly, and produce deadly conditions for everything else.

Yup, just like lynden said, some toxins and huge spikes of ammonia and nitrite which other corals and fish wont tolerate. If you're gon long enough you can get into a chain reaction where they die too and keep leeching more and more ammonia/nitrite into the tank until the whole ecosystem crashes. Not fun :(

tell you what dont like the idea of an anemone i think i like my tank too much to see it get destroyed by something expensive and hard to look after u all basically stopped me from making a big mistake cheers from me and my fish

Glad we could help :good:. I've got a setup nearly suited for one and I dont have any plans to get one in the near future. I too like my tank the way it is 8)

i dont like nems in tanks full stop, just think the nem in your tank may have been around since the civil war. only to be bung'd in someones tank to live for about 2 years then die.... not good imo.

p.s its not just the fact that they rot fast, when they catch food the expel a toxin to imobalize prey, when they die it all gets expelled. toxin + rot = nuke
