Hi
Ok, so we all keep bettas, which are Anabantoids. Therefore they breath from the surface. :good:

I was just interested to know whether anyone had any thoughts as to whether cigarette smoke can cause harm to an anabantoid?

This is a serious question and not one that i want turning into a smoking/anti-smoking argument :D

Anyone any knowledge or know of any research???

I don't know of any research done on it but i should think that they will intake smoke with the air when they breath however they don't have lungs like we do.....

you know this is a really interesting question

also i betta with a lid on it's tank in theory would get a lot less maybe even no smoke?

I think it'd depend...a lid on the tank would definitely help.

I don't know if any of you smoke, but I've never even tried it and when I'm in a smokers house, or for example, my mother in law gave me dishes...I had to soak the dishes because they stunk so bad like smoke. I would assume, especially with plastic around tanks, they would smell and that would be absorbed into the water...just my opinion, obviously lol Nicotine laced water probably isn't good, either.

I dunno. Even with a lid I think the fish would be inhaling at least some smoke. And even though their lungs aren't the same as ours, it still can't be good for them :dunno:

Just my opinion, though!

i don't think a lid would make any difference really, when you take it off smoke gets in, plus fresh air needs to get in for the fish

Yeh. The lid thing got me thinking, well the lack of lids i've seen on some peoples tanks.

It was that that made me think about it? I smoke and have lids on the tanks which, thinking about it now, do actually fit very well. I suppose a condensation tray along with the lid would be even better?

Like said, they dont have lungs like us so dont know whether it affects them or not?

We need some scientific bods on really :good:

If your lid was fitted well enough to stop smoke from getting in then air wouldn't get in either and the fish would suffocate, so a small amout would still get through even with condensation trays.

It would be interesting to know how it effects them but i still can't see it not being bad for them

That is a really good question.

I'd have to go with... yes, I think it would affect them.
As someone else already mentioned, when you get near a smoker or go into a smokers home... you can smell it everywhere. And when you leave or get away from someone who was smoking, you can definitely smell it on yourself... so I think if a tank was sitting in a smokers home, then the waters and such would absorb the smoke and lid or no lid, the smoke would still get into the tank.

I dunno... very interesting question though, makes ya think! heh

it probably depends also on the nature of a smoker, for instance my mum and sister who live together both smoke rolled DIY ciggies, thier house never smells.....
yet my skanky grizzly old man neighbour who lives in the flat below us even stinks out OUR flat with his smoke, because he smoke manufactured straights.......and if it was someone like him with fish, I'd agree, he'd definately affect them in someway, if he can manage to stink out somebody elses flat....he could deffo do over a fish tank.....where as i highly doubt my mum and sister ever would, probably because they open windows and doors, etc aswell, but the two types is definately very different.

And pipe smoke is something else ;) my old fart dad smokes a pipe, it's so embarassing......i'm like the only family member who doesn't smoke! :good:

well fish do not have the long lifespans humans do, or well bettas at least, but there is signifacant research that second hand smoke is extreamly bad for human children...as in chronic colds, sickness, ear infections, asthma, cancer and a host of other problems...

as fish keepers who would rant and rave about the evils of ammonia and nitrites, second hand smoke getting into the water should be a big NONO too, esp considering those who use air pumps are going to pushing it into the water even more.

this question I pose to fish owners who smoke....would you say the next time you are having a drink dump some beer in the tank for your fishs to share too?

I think we all know nobody would do that, and nobody here is arguing that smoking around fish is good....

Thanks Holllyp0p :good: This is certainly not to be turned into a debate on smoking please :D

thanks...i try....i'm like a bucket of cold water to these situations ;)

on a random note YOU HAVE SO MANY BETTAS NOW NETTY!!!

I know   Getting more at the weekend and more tanks

sorry im not trying to turn it into a trainwreck, just trying to give it perspective.

I guess just saying that we worry so much about our fish, and we possibley dont realise what else could hurt them.
