After reading lots of cycling posts on here, I have decided to fishless cycle my tank in preperation for adding fish (i have been under the impression my "Cycle" product done this)

Where in the UK, specifically Surrey, or even more specific Epsom, can I buy pure amonia to cycle my tank? I went to my local chemist but got the feeling I should not be asking for this after he said no and walked away with a suspect look on his face.

Some Boots do it; otherwise I found the small local hardware store was the most helpful (the kind that stocks 50 different screws next to the teacosies).

Someone told us that ammonia is an ingredient in the manufacture of crack- this might explain the suspect look. If you are young, perhaps best to send your nan or Mum shopping, anyone who looks so old that they might still want ammonia to clean their windows (oh dear, what does this say about me?).

hahahaha    I didn't know that and how do you know ?!?! Have you been doing some chemistry?!?! :p :p

No, I think somebody mentioned it on this forum. As if I would know things like that!

hmmm i went into the LFS and asked for it and they gave me that funny look and said 'what do you want it for?'.

then they advised me that they do not sell it and it would be better to cycle by adding plants and nutrafin cycle as this would make the cycle very speedy and i could get a couple of barbs to cycle it fully.

I got my ammonia from homebase in the household section. It is in a white tub and it is homebase's own brand.

I got mine from Homebase as well. Its a a white bottle with blue writing that says Household Ammonia.

Its about £1.99 for 500ml I think.

I have NEVER come across an lfs that knows about fishless cycling or stocks ammonia. IME they want to sell their cycling products which usually do not work. And they are not necessarily going to be devastated if you keep having to replace your fish ever so often.

Hardware shops are the place to go for ammonia.

I have been shopping around as a newbie too.. all of the LFS i have spoken to just say, fill up the tank, leave it running, then get the fish in 5-7 days..

and i thought i was the newbie... ;)

Squid, they are just after a quick sale then! A fishless cycle shouldn't take much longer that 10 days if you do it correctly :)

I have 2 bottles of unopened Jeyes Ammonia at home. If you guys struggle to get it, I will can send half a bottle for £2 (incl. P&P) (more then plenty for a few fishless cycles). A whole bottle in the shop is £2, but it's postage is quite heavy.

Check out this thread I had in they buy/sell section a while ago.
