Please help I have looked all over for Ammonia and can't find any anywhere  I have been in Boots, Superdrugs, Tescos, and several hairdressers. I know you use to be able to buy powdered bleach and Ammonia for doing hair but I cant find any. The lady in Boots said its now used for cleaning glass and mirrors but they didn't have it. I don't know where to buy it, I've been told to try petshops but they dont have any either. (And they keep telling me it would be better to get some hardy fish and cycle with them :/ )
I live in Kent in the UK. Please can some1 tell me where to get some and what I'm looking for exactly? (Will it say Ammonia on the bottle or does it have a product name?) Thanx for your help :)

Household isle of HOMEBASE

It will say ammonia on the bottle and will cost about £1.99.
If you look inside it will be clear. DON'T SNIFF IT (you've been warned! :grr: )

Yes, dorsey and the UKers will be most helpful to you but I will add that, at least here in the US, sometimes when you finally find the right one, it doesn't have an ingredients list at all, simply says "Clear Ammonia" or such. I was lucky and found it right away in my normal grocery store. The bottle was clear so I could see that there were no colors (and no fragrances or surfactants listed) and I could see it didn't foam at all when shaken. I didn't like that no percentage or ingredients were listed but it has turned out fine and my first bacteria group find it very tasty!

As it was not designed by the makers for Cyling purposes it always comes in wacking great bottles which is far more than you'll ever need unless you are cycling the ocean......
It does, however, get over one other little problem, after you sniff it and pass out, when you come round there is still enough left for you to cycle your tank!

 absolutely true! gad it can really knock you out!
I kept shaking my head at the waste of my huge half-gallon or something bottle but then, for me, I've been very unfortunate trying to get the second bacterial population going in my sons tank and have really been using a fair amount of my bottle in the long run.

I found mine at a hardware stor of all places. I'm not from the UK so I'm not sure if any of the places you checked were hardware places.

Farmers merchants always stock pure ammonia. Most chemists don't stock it any more but you might get lucky at local/family run chemists. I'm sure you already know this but make sure its pure ammonia, the ingredients should just be ammonia and water, alternatively shake the bottle, if bubble are at the top then it is not pure ammonia, good luck.

I agree, Homebase is your best bet. The product is called 'Household Ammonia'.

Good luck! :good:
