Ammonia Levels Just Dont Go Down Quick Enough

ok, how big do you think the water change should be? there are no tff media donors in my area at all im afraid :(

the water changes should be in relation to whats happening in the tank. of course if the ammonia levels are consistently high , then a 25% plus water change is in order. if levels peak and do not seem to be coming down 40 or 50 % may be necessary. i would never really do more than 50% in a cycling tank

thanks furryrabbit, i just did a 25% water change and now im going to give the cycle a chance and see what happens. Did you do this when you cycled your tank? did it make a big difference?

You could, in theory, do a 100% water change with no ill effect - as long as you dechlorinate the new water and add more ammonia straight away. After all, to add fish you will have to get the nitrate level down below 50mg/l.
