American Flag Fish?

Hey Guys,

I own a 60Liter freshwater tank and have been looking into getting an American Flag Fish, at the moment I have some Male Guppies, Male Platies and neon tetras in the aquarium - is an American flag fish compatible with these tank mates? In the future i hope to also get a dwarf Gourami or two, and perhaps a ram - would these be possible with the American flag?

I have tried looking on other sites but have got mixed information - Please help

P.S. I am relatively new to the hobby so any other tips are greatly appreciated

Hi how many fish do you have in numbers? It may be that you are already fully stocked in a 60 liter tank...

If you add the flag fish you wont be able to add the gourami or the ram - I would forget the ram as well as they will not fit well with the other fish due to their needs for high temperatures and low ph - which is a strong contrast to the Guppies and Platies.

Wills :)

5 Gupppies, 2 Platies and 2 Neon Tetras :)

Hmmmm bit of a bad stocking if I am honest I was hoping to see

2 Platies
3 Guppies
5 Neon Tetras

Tetras are schooling fish and need to be in larger numbers to feel safe. Where as guppies and platies are fine in low numbers or as singles.

I think to that kind of stocking you would be okay to add 2 Flag Fish - failing that you could rehome the two Neons and then adding the flags would be a very safe bet and the Neons would stand a chance of finding a larger school that they need.

Hey this info may be a bit outdated but I thought you needed either a single flag fish or at least six as they can be aggressive to eachother?

I am aware of the Neon's numbers - I am getting more this weekend as long as I have the right water conditions.

So do you think i could get flagfish and a gourami? if i were to lose the tetras?

flagfish are subtropical, so if their highest average temperature matches and temp in the range of your other fish, they could be compatible. it depends on the gouramis, try and get a sparkling gouramis. so you could maybe use either a flagfish or a sparkling gouramis, or another small gouramis

this concerns me... are you saying you aren't sure if your water is stable yet? i wouldn't add anything until you make sure it is if this is the case

No it is stable at the moment - and I'm going to check it stays that way though :)
