As a temporary measure I had to put my female betta in a breeding box in the krib tank with the male swimming freely with the kribs. All was good until the other day my mum let me know that the female had jumped into the main tank with the male... I got home quite upset expecting the female to be dead and she is my only remaining female as during a clean out the cat got the white Cambodian I had... To my surprise male and female are living in perfect harmony! I left her and she has now been with the male for about 1-2 weeks and no injuries or dead fish. I suspect this is because for some reason ever since I bought her she has kept her stress stripes no matter what so she actually looks like a young krib at a quick glance. Obviously I am keeping a good keen eye on both of them and hoping she'll be alright till I get my male display tank(a divided 2ft basically) for my PK and my new HM I'll be getting tomorrow. I have pictures and proof they are living together.

Please don't slate me because of the puffer in the breeding box... His tank cracked and so I also need to get him a new tank...

to be honest the female doesn't look happy, she looks pale and is showing stress stripes, 1-2 weeks is nothing anyway, it tends to bad after a few months i call it 'moody teenager stage' where he will not tolerate and kill any females present

She's always like that whether she's alone or with other fish. I've tried her in different environments and she's always the same. A few months gives me plenty of time to get the 2ft to divide. He is an adult male and he has a batch of babies that are growing currently... She however is only tiny, about 1" long from the LFS.

not worth the risk IMO the male *especially a fully mature adult* can turn at any time, you could pop out round the corner shop and come back to a dead fish :/

I know but I literally have no where else to put him... I'm getting a tank to divide for the 2 males in about 2 weeks so I hope he should be OK till then. If not I'll make a snap decision on what to do as right now I can't think of anything...

spare storage tub?

No spare heater or filter and he jumps quite easily so I can't just leave him floating in the main tank in it. If my mum's Fiancée can get me some perspex or something and make a divider out of it I can divide my 8 gallon which literally has 1 male HM Betta in it... I'll ask him tomorrow and then I have something to fall back on.

Why not find a piece of plastic or something you can use as a lid on the breeding trap so that the fish inside it cant jump out? You could get a deli container like the ones shown below and cut a piece big enough out of the top of it to fit and put something on it to weigh it down.

I use them as humidity domes for propagating leaves from my african violet collection and other plants.

We've not got any plastic lids that will fit on a breeding trap and the female just jumps till it comes off. Not sure if there is anything I can really use... I'll just have to try working something out.
