Hi all,

Last week, I got in 7 amano shrimps for my 65 ltr tank. My tank is nicely planted and has sand as a substrate. Also, it has a nice big piece of bogwood and another resin cave thingy for the fishes to hide. I had a couple of questions about amano shrimps:

1. At my lfs, I saw the shrimps busy turning over the sand and very active. However, the first day I popped them into the tank they disappeared. I couldn't see any of them. I thought they had jumped out and escaped. Yesterday, I saw them behind the bogwood, all 7 of them. Briefly, I'll see a shrimp turning over the sand. My question is why are they behind the bogwood? Is that normal? Are they hiding?

2. How can I clean a tank with shrimps in it? From what my lfs told me and I've seen, they can jump quite a bit. So how can I vacuum the sand without them jumping out? I generally take out the ornaments including the bogwood. But if there are shrimps on the bogwood, it might disturb them and might cause them to jump out. Any advise as to how I can clean my tank without upsetting the shrimps?

amano shrimps are great at hiding and are quite shy especially when they first go in the tank.

also they like to be in big groups, 7 is a decent number but bear in mind in the lfs they were quite likely very heavily stocked so would have felt much more secure and therefore been very active.

i've never had a shrimp jump ship so don't worry too much over it, just clean normally and keep an eye out for any jumpers.

Thanks Miss Wiggle :)

Yesterday, I put my finger on the tank (near the bogwood where the shrimps were hiding) and a few of them moved, however, one of them shot off like a bullet. I couldn't see him anywhere. I have a small opening at the back of the tank for wires etc and I thought he had jumped out of there. After 5 minutes of searching, I saw him at the back of the filter on the opposite side of the tank. My only concern is when I vacuum the sand, and with all the ornaments taken out there won't be much cover for them apart from the plants. So if I go too near for their comfort...

just move the vac around the tank slowly no sudden movements and they'll get out of the way.

they do shoot off pretty quick, but we've never lost one. got them in an open topped tank too with no problems.

Excellent! Thanks again Miss Wiggle :) This forum does fill you with confidence :good:

lol, it seems Miss Wiggle is jsut full of answers. Since you are, can you tell me how to post a new forum topic? im new and have no idea how to do anything right now

If you go down to the bottom right hand corner, or top right hand corner of the page, you will see there is an button that says, "post new topic", click that and you will be able to create your own thread. :good: Also, I have never seen my amano shrimp jump out, and mine still hide behind this rock I have in my tank. It's completely normal for them to be dashing about and they will come out when they feel like it. :shifty:
