Amano Shrimps

I bougt 3 today & i cant see them ....... are they shy by nature ? do they come out of their shell ( so to speak ) ............

if i am not mistaken (others correct me if i'm wrong) shrimp need to be in large groups (like 6+) and still then they will hide. i have heard rumors that they tend to come out more at night. i don't know how true that is but it's what i have been told.

don't quote me on it yet. wait until other people respond. amanos can be different. i know with ghost shrimp it's more the merrier and they will still hide. but when they are out and about they are a really good clean up crew. they pick leftover fish food out of plants and such. they are gentle and won't really bother with other bottom dwellers and from what i understand is that they don't do anything really to your bioload (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate). nut i wouldn't get a whole bunch if your tank will be overcrowded. what size tank do you have and what other fish are in it?

With amano's it tends to be the more there are the braver they are, but even with a large group it will probably still be a few months before you see them out and about.

In very very large groups they tend to seround any food and stop anything else getting to it.

Hi Number 1 Jasper. I bought 2 amano shrimps last week and posted a similar thread cos I didn't see them for a few days. Now I see them most days wondering round when my lights are on, they even try to pinch the food off my corys! Added another 2 today. They are quite fascinating once they get use to the tank and start to show themselves. :D

We have red cherry shrimp in 3 of our tanks and in each and every tank they behave differently!!The ones in my sons tank tend to only hide when they are sulking  If we take longer than normal on a water change or move anything around, add new plants or such like then they disappear for a few days and 'sulk' all the others in the other tanks are pretty much always out and about be it at night with lights off or during the day. I am sure once your shrimp get used to the tank they will come out more and when they realise what is happening at feeding time - just you watch!!!But have plenty of time on hand because if you are anything like I am you will be glued to the tank once they are out

Thanks Little Lady :)

If rosy barbs are anything like tiger barbs (and they are), and amano shrimps are gentle shy little shrimp like ghost shrimps (which they are), your rosy barbs have probably devoured your amano shrimps. :(

Hi,

I bought 3 amano shrimp at the weekend and added them to a tank with silver tipped tetra and platies. Mine are very brave as they have settled right in. I expected them to hide and be nervous but no they are running round they tank like they own the place.

Perhaps mine are just very out going.

i have 5 in my 20 gall and they seem very unshy

but i only have very very peaceful fish in my tank

i think they will get used to the tank and then come out

they do feel more " self confident " if you add more

i love them bc their the only water creature that can live on sh"t

but make sure they get thier food too /..

Great pictures and very informative. I have been thinking about getting a few and now I will be!
Do they count as fish when it comes to stock levels?
