im thinking about getting about 4, do they clean the bottom of the tank? iv just changed 2 sand and i never sppreciated how much mess is made from everything, whats people views on them???

What is your tank set up and stocking?

If you are talking about fish poop, the shrimp will not eat that. They will eat any missed food or decaying plant matter.

whats the best kind of shrimp for just generally keeping the tank clean-ish, something that will dispose of the waste on the sand

Nothing will eat FW fish poop except the bacteria that will eventually break it down. You just have to siphon vacuum the poop out. I understand there is a SW fish that eats poop though.

Amano shrimp are good scavengers (as mentioned, they don't eat waste though) and will also eat algae. They really don't add anything to the bio-load either.
