I recently bought 6 Amano Shrimp fomr my local Pet Smart (I know, they suck but they are the only people around here that carry them). They were the coolest little things I've ever kept in my tank. They were in there with 6 brilliant rasboras, 3 rummy-nose tetras, one gold barb and one Siamese Algae Eater. And now they are gone...well, one is left, I spotted him the other day. And they are not just hiding, I have scoured the tank up and down for them and only that one is left. I didn't think I had anything in there that would eat them, someone could have ripped them apart piece by piece....but I don't think so. My water stats are as follows: PH 6.4, Ammonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 0ppm, nitrate between 20-40 pm (crap test kit). My stats look fine to me for the shrimp.....any ideas guys and gals??

I feel the Siamese Algae Eater could be to blame, possibly. With all the dangling parts of the shrimp, he might just think it's food and try to take a bite.

They sometimes are not in the best of shape, and considering they came from petsmart, this could be the case. Though, could it be possible they were Ghost Shrimp? I have not seen a petsmart carry amano's around me.

No they were definately Amano Shrimp. I think I'm gonna try to move some fish out of the 29 gal planted into my 55 gal and leave in the tetras (as well as get some more) and then try them again, they were definately little algae eating machines.

There's a PetSmart a few hours from me that carries them. I have at least three for sure of five I bought a few months ago still moving around. It's a moderately planted tank with driftwood so there's no telling how many survived. I do 3-4 times a week doses of liquid calcium and iodine as well to help with molters. If they molt, chances are good something, including their own kind will eat them.

I put ten into an empty 70gal. Went away for the week end and came back to find only 2 left !!!! I have since found 2 in various locations on my rooms floor. I never herd of them being jumpers but this is my only explaineation to where they went.

Piper is spot on. They are amazing jumpers and amazing escape artists.

50 quid says they've jumped out of your tank, on to the floor and managed to crawl up to 7 METERS away from your tank (usually towards a light source such as a doorway or window).

I speak from experience. My tank is COVERED.... Idiot little things still managed to escape! The reason for the jumping / escaping is that they are VERY fussy re: water conditions and are therefore only best introduced SLOWLY to well established (>1year old) tanks. Again, I speak from experince - no more escapees.

I have a tank with a gourami and bumblebee cat and i thought all 4 or 5 that I bought had died but saw one the other day by some driftwood and this morning saw to molted skins so i guess they just like to hide.
