Am I Being Stupid?

Aaah probably been said but im bored and fancy a nice long typing session lol...

Bettas are tropical fish so WILL reequire a heater unless your house is abnormally hot in the day AND night to keep a stable temperature. They do not tolerate alot of tank mates and their tank mates may not tolerate them. Good housemates (this is if you use the 20 gallon) would be a shoal of around 8 white cloud mountain minnows and 2 african dwarf frogs. This way the tank has a shoal of schooling fish, a main centre piece and a couple of oddball looking critters as per the frogs. On a 20 gallon you would need a filter for it and a 100-150 watt heater (I have a 150 watt heater and a filter for a 10 gallon for salein the Buy, Sell And Swap! section of the forums ;) )

Anything else you need to know PM me :)

Well, that hasn't been said, no, but IMO your house would have to be abnormally cold for a betta to not find it appealing. :p I don't use any sort of heater and my tank hovers around 75 degrees. Is this strange? IMO I think it is fine without a heater as long as your house is not cold but like I said, well, I'm just a newbie, but my fish is doing fine without one. 4 months now.

I do agree a heater is a good idea unless your house is always 75F or more. I don't know how your water stays at 75 if your house is colder than that. Thats strange. I used to keep bettas without heaters until I heard they were tropical. I had them for years and nobody every told me that!?! So now that mine are in warmer water, they are much happier and more active. When they are cold, they just lay on the bottom and are completely boring. Not to mention, miserable.

Yeah, heaters are helpful.. but it is hard to find a heater for a 1g bowl.

And my tank stays at 75 because I guess that's about the temp in my house. It doesn't seem warm to me. But I'm a skinny little girl and I guess I prefer it a bit warm. :p

Now that I think about it, when I was in my dorm room, it was cooler in general, but I kept my tank at the back of my laptop and always kept my laptop on, so the heat from the lappy heated the tank. It's adjustible in that you can move the tank/lappy closer and further apart! I kept the temp at 80 back then. I haven't noticed any difference in my fish's behaviour ever since I moved and stopped heating with the lappy.

People are strange, I don't find it that warm at all.

But yeah heaters are nice.

Hey actually now that I think about it, my fish seems happier nowadays than back then. I wonder what's the deal. :p

well its always hot im my house cuz weve got lizards and his heater is always on up around the 90f mark, but its down a bit at night, so it warms the room more than ud think, im hoping this would keep it warm enough for a betta, what do u think?
