Im slightly worried about my betta franko as he has recently got a few tears in his tail, he also has black edging on his tail ever since i got him 12 weeks ago but looks as if its not spreading or going away. Could it be part of his markings?? . I already did a weeks course of api melafix and didnt notice any change.

He has tore his tail on the filter inlet vents as he has a habit of lying against them, ive put objects in the way of the vents but still he has to squeese in against them  He's just a nosey ####.

I have no access to another tank or filter so was wondering if i could transfer him into a bucket and medicate in that for a week???

thanks neil.

I think your best keeping him where he is, taking out the filter sponges and it might be a good idea to move live plants into something else if you have live plants.
Unless you have other fish with your betta then theres no point moving him around.
About the filter, maybe try buy another i dont know if you use it but i highly recommend using a stingray 5, there great filters and are very safe.
Also aquarium salt is very good for healing, maybe get some off this, and treat as best as you can.
Goodluck.
( You may not even have to use medication just sort out the filter problem if thats whats making the tail rip, and in time it should heal but it depends on how bad the rips are can you provide a picture?
Medication and aquarium salt might help with the healing process. )
Daily water changes and a good diet is another thing to help.
I would really recommend getting another filter, or taking the one you have out until you buy another.

thanks for the reply, sadly hes in with other fish so i cant use the salt or take out the filter. on the plus side im ordering a new filter soon. as you say it could be just the case.
thanks again neil.

In that case i'd watch him and see if his fins get worse, if he does move him immediately do a plastic tank or sotrage box, just to use the meds( remember use some of your own tank water hes in and then just dechlorinate some tap water.
I'm sure he'l be ok. :)
Glad your getting another filter x

Hi Neil,

One of my bettas was continually damaging his tails (and dorsal fin) on the filter intake, too. I caught him numerous times lying right up against it, just as you say. You may well find the same problem with a new filter - but it's easily solved. Just get a piece of filter floss or thin filter foam and wrap it around the vents of the intake. Secure with a rubber band. (Some people use a small piece of women's stockings/tights/pantyhose for this, too!) It keeps any fins from getting pulled in and has the added advantage of acting like nice pre-filter for your filter, too. :)

I can now say the same thing to you as was said to me when I posted worried about the fin damage: Don't worry - if it's just a torn fin, it should heal nicely. Make sure he's got good clean water and it'll heal up in no time. Cover your intake, though, so it doesn't keep happening.

BTW, the black edging etc could well just be his coloration - but if you can get a pic up, that would definitely be helpful. :)

thanks very much everyone who replied to my message some great advice.
neil.
